Birth Story for Anna

Born Tuesday 16th April 2002, 04:21 am

Weight: 3 820g (8lb 7oz)
Length: 52 cm
Head circumference: 34.8 cm

Baby Anna was very reluctant to come into the world. She was quite happy inside me growing bigger and bigger. I could certainly feel that she was getting big and strong as the kicks she gave me were very powerful particularly during the last few days and even into the labour itself. I had originally been booked for induction on the 11th but I put this forward to the 15th hoping I?d go into labour myself. However this was not to be although really as it turned out it was more ?encouragement? was all I needed as my body was so ready. So on Monday morning of April 15th (when I was 42 weeks) I went to hospital to be induced. I dropped my son off at my parents and my husband and I went into hospital at 10.30am. We were taken to the ante-natal ward where I was checked over and the baby monitored for a short while. At 11.20 am I was given a dose of Prostin gel which was inserted into my cervix. I was told I would be monitored again in an hour?s time and that I should lie flat to allow the gel to take effect. An hour later the baby was checked and everything was fine. I was given 6 hours for the gel to work (if it hadn?t I would need another dose). During this time I could just walk about as normal. By late afternoon I could feel mild contractions starting and I was checked over again and was told I had dilated to 2cm. I wouldn?t need any more Prostin and was told that later in the evening I could have my waters broken.

The contractions continued to get gradually stronger. My husband left around 7pm to pick up our son from my parents and to take him back home and put him to bed. I had a lovely long hot bath for an hour. Once I was out I could feel my contractions becoming stronger and at the rate of about every 10 minutes. I was informed that I could go to the labour ward about 10pm when the night staff came on shift. I lay quietly on the bed and read my book. As time went on the contractions became stronger and increased to every 5-7 minutes. I noticed when I went to the bathroom that they increased in intensity as I stood up. I found them quite bearable and was able to breath through them. As the evening wore on I was even falling asleep between contractions! The baby was really kicking me hard even at this stage. I spent all this time on my own but really didn?t mind. About 12.45am I phoned my husband and he arrived an hour later.

I had been told that the labour ward was busy and I couldn?t go through to have my waters broken. Eventually when things were just getting difficult they said I could go through ? by this time it was 3am! I staggered towards the wheelchair they offered and felt my waters breaking. The wheelchair had a puncture and so it was a rather bumpy ride to the labour ward. However it wasn?t far away and I was even able to laugh about my journey there. I was taken in and put on a bed and monitored. My waters had only partially broken so the midwife finished the job. The contractions were about 4-5 minutes and lasting longer than a minute. I was finding it difficult to deal with now, particularly as I was getting tired and had no pain relief at all. The midwife gave me gas and air but I really don?t like this and it doesn?t do anything for me except make me feel nauseous. I asked about morphine and was told to wait for a bit. If I?d known how quick things were going to be I?d not have bothered at all. I had dilated to 5cms by this stage. About 3.30am the midwife gave me some morphine and went for her break joking that I?d better not have the baby while she was away. I remember looking at the clock waiting for the morphine to kick in ? I knew it would be around 3.45am. I was expecting things to take hours.

However around 4am the replacement midwife had gone to get me some ice and my husband a coffee and so there was only my husband in the room when I felt pressure from below and an urge to push. I shouted to my husband ?something?s happening? and he rushed out of the room and got the student doctor and midwife. Soon the baby?s head appeared and I was told I could push. This was the hardest part as the morphine hadn?t taken proper effect and I found the contractions and the sensation of my cervix opening extremely powerful. The contractions were still only about every 2-4 minutes. I pushed the baby?s head out and my husband looked at the clock and said come on it is nearly 4.20 am (the time our son was born) and urged me to push the whole baby out. However I had to wait for another contraction and really had to push hard before Anna came rushing out at 4.21 am (missed it by a minute!). I distinctly remember the midwife catching her and holding her up and saw straight away that she was a girl. Probably because I was still very lucid and the whole thing was so quick I felt an amazing sense of happiness. Anna was laid across my tummy straight away and I bonded immediately.

We couldn't believe she was so big (8lbs, 7oz) as my bump wasn't much bigger than my son (6lbs 2oz). She is a bit longer but more chunky than my son was. Anna had her first breastfeed half an hour later and took to it very well. After some tea and toast my husband left for home. It was a beautiful sunny morning and turned into a gorgeous sunny day the whole day long. Spring is lovely time to have a baby and we won't be able to look at a daffodil again without thinking of her as there are masses of them growing round the fields here.

Wow! Just amazing Eulalia, thanks for sharing that - after reading that and having major PMT mood swings I am just sooooo broody (but don't tell anyone )

Jasper · 09/05/2002 22:02

There is nothing in the world which compares with the birth of a baby. Thanks for a beautiful description of baby Anna's arrival.

Janus · 09/05/2002 22:38

Eulalia, that was beautiful, brought a tear to my eye, especially as I am very broody at the moment. We are trying to hang on as we are trying to sell our flat, etc. Just wanted to ask if you thought labour no. 2 was any easier than your first, am hoping so!!!!!!!

Lovely story, Eulalia - and haven't the daffodils in Aberdeen been glorious?? I came in to the city today, and was admiring the late flowering ones.

threeangels · 10/05/2002 00:47

Eulalia,I had a pretty fast delivery with my 9 year old daughter. When I started having contractions they came on pretty fast that morning. So I decided to head for the hospital. When I got there I got all suited up the usual thing. After a couple hours of contractions they really started getting painful I knew the baby would be coming soon. The last time my doctor came in I was pretty dialated but to the doctors I guess not enough to push yet. Well the doctor left and then came back again to evaluate me thats when I started feeling the urge to push but when the nursed checked me she said if I tried nothing would happen because I had a little ways to go yet. I told my husband infront of the doctor in a panicing mode at this time that Ive really got to push. I guess you could say I was losing it about now. So the doctor started prepping herself the only problem is she was going a little to slow before I or even they knew it my dd shot out in mid air like a cannon ball. My doctor almost dropped her on her head. I couldnt see but I got the whole scary story then, funny story now from my dh and family.

Eulalia, what a beautiful story, and beautifully told. Brought a lump to my throat it did. Thank you for sharing it!

Ahhhh sniff sniff

tigermoth · 10/05/2002 10:13

I never wrote down my birth stories, but reading yours brings it all back. Like you Eulalia, my second son was late and considerably bigger than my first son. I had a very similar birth experiece to you as well, though didn't manage to fall asleep between contractions

ariel · 10/05/2002 12:56

My first son was born at 39 weeks,it was pretty straight forward and painfull untill the midwife said he was brow presentation,so after 17 long hours i had an emergency section. My next (a girl) was born at 32 weeks it was very quick less than an hour and i had no pain releif, it was a easy and quick birth thankfully. And my third who is just 12 weeks old made a very early appearance at 29 weeks, my waters broke on wednesday 13th feb iwas quickly taken to hospital and given steroids and antibiotics and told i would deliver soon but 4 days later i was still very much pregnant,on the sunday i felt ill i had a bit of backache and i had a high temp and the bubs heartbeat was too fast so i was taken into the deliverey suite soon after my labour started i got to 10 cm dilated very quickly ,but after an hour pushing my bubs was distressed his heartbeat was slowing down and i just couldnt push anymore, so the docs finally delivered him with forceps. I will never forget the feeling of haveing my son delivered straight on to me ,he was so small and he was taken away almost immediatly to be ventalated. But im extremely pleased to say my beutifull son is thriving and now is a very healthy 8lbs 8oz.

I am a sentimental old thing ?º I kept some daffodils from the garden and pressed them to make into a 1st birthday card. Did the same thing for my son and wrote a poem about the roses growing in our garden (he was born in July) in the card too. When we moved house last May I was sad to leave the rose bush as it was a climbing kind and I could see them from the window. My sister who works in the botany dept at the university helped me to take some cuttings but said they would be difficult to grow. One cutting managed to take root and now I have a small part of the rose bush in a pot.

Yes SueDonim Aberdeen is lovely for all kinds of flowers. We live in the country and they grow fields and fields of daffodils ¡V it is a bit like living in Holland. Now we¡¦ve got the yellow from the rape in the fields.

Threeangels ¡V wow what a delivery ¡V glad the doctor managed to catch her!

Ariel ¡V that must have been scary delivering at 29 weeks ¡V amazing to think that your boy is still ¡¥younger¡¦ now than my girl when she was delivered. I am glad that everything has turned out well.

I wore the same t-shirt when I gave birth to both my children, and brought dd home from hospital in the same vest and sleepsuit that ds came home in. I've given away all my other baby things, but I'll keep those two little garments forever - even now I pull them out occasionally and marvel at how tiny both children were.

Here?s my dd?s birth story...born 1st November 1996

The day before my due date (26th Oct ? dmil?s birthday ? the pressure was on!) I had an internal and was 3cm dilated already! I was shocked, excited and scared all at once. My dr (doctor) told me he would see me at the hospital within a couple of days. Five days later, nothing! After getting all psyched up for it, I was so disappointed, not to mention getting very physically uncomfortable! On Halloween night I had a call from a friend, ready with sympathy for my late and sorry state. My dh was at uni, so I was home by myself. About half an hour after I had talked to my friend, about 9.30pm, I felt a small gush of fluid. Ran to the loo ? more fluid! Everything was soaked and there was a little puddle on the floor. It smelled sort of sweet, really unusual. I rang the hospital and they said to come in and have it checked out, but that I could probably come home again if contractions hadn?t started yet. So I waited til dh got home and off we went ? not taking the bag I had packed months before, since we only lived 5-10 mins from the hospital.

Yes it was amniotic fluid, heartbeat was good, and everything seemed fine. The midwife Nikki called the dr to see if he wanted her to do an internal and yes, he did. While she was doing it, she had a strange expression on her face and I asked what was wrong. ?That can?t be right,? she said, ?Are you sure you haven?t had any contractions?? I said no, I didn?t think so, just some backache, which I?d had for days anyway. ?Well, you?re already 6cm dilated!? WOW! But my waters hadn?t actually broken; it was what they call a hindwater leak. The dr arrived about 11pm and ruptured the mebrane, which was quick and painless but an amazing amount of warm fluid gushed out, extraordinary sensation.

Within 15 mins, the backpain was worse than ever, constant but intensifying with each contraction. I felt all the contractions in my lower back and later in my rectum as well, don?t recall feeling the abdominal tightening I had with ds 2nd time around. It was due to the fact that dd was in a posterior position, and her back was pressing along mine IYKWIM. I stood under a VERY hot shower (I was going bright red and my dh was very worried he was burning me, but I just kept yelling at him to make it HOTTER!) DH asked if he could go home and get my bag (which had my CD?s, tennis ball ? for massage, not ?cos I fancied a game! - and the camera among other things), but the dr said things could happen very quickly now and he should stay ? just in case! (Of course, as it turned out, he would have had plenty of time, but it didn?t really matter ? and they had some CD?s in the room, so I had Enya and Phantom of the Opera!!!) Hip circles, back massage, hotpacks and breathing got me thru the next hour or so, but after that I couldn?t stand up anymore and couldn?t settle in any position. I tried the gas, leaning over a beanbag, but it made me nauseous. When I got the urge to push, Nikki did an internal and found I was only 7-8cm dilated. I was devastated and exhausted, crying and groaning. I said ?YES!? as soon as pethidine was offered, even though I had originally thought I wouldn?t have it. It made me very sleepy, but the pain was still intense. I felt very confused and disoriented. I think it was at about this point I practically tore off the hospital gown they had given me ? it was as if something primal inside me made me want to be naked, I just really needed to be. Had you told me a few months earlier that I would want to give birth naked, I would never have believed it! Finally at 2am I got the green light to push. I ended up with the beanbag on the bed, and after much ineffective pushing (I was just too tired), the dr suggested he try the vacuum. I was past caring by this stage; I just wanted it to be over so I could go to sleep!

The last part of dd?s birth is a blur. I was on my back on the bed, feet in stirrups ? not part of my birth plan at all! There was a lot of blood, and I vaguely recall the dr saying he needed to do an episiotomy. I remember the sting of the needle but didn?t realise he had cut me until afterwards when he started stitching me up! The suction took 3 or 4 tries, as it kept slipping off (in hindsight it was so absurd it was almost comical - this bloody suction thingy kept flying up and spraying everyone and everything, including the wall if I remember correctly!) When her head finally emerged, the cord was wrapped around her neck. Dr was cool and calm; quickly clamping the cord, he still let dh cut it. Finally at 4.08am, Tessa Maree was born, weighing 7lb 12 and a half oz, 49cm long, with a mop of dark brown hair. And after being so ridiculously tired, I simply couldn?t sleep for the whole next day! Buzz buzz buzz. On the way home from hospital a few days later, I noticed all the jacaranda trees had burst into colour as if overnight, beautiful lilac coloured treetops everywhere. They still always flower around Tessa?s birthday every year.

Part 2 ? ds? (very different) birth to follow ? if you can stand it that is!
