What pain relief were you offered after C-section?

I'm just wondering after reading another thread. I was in excruciating pain after having my daughter and could barely move. I was offered paracetamol, and it was only after really badgering them that they gave me codeine. I was offered stronger pain relief during a more minor op a few years before, so it seems strange that they would give so little after a major operation.

Is this now standard procedure? Or just a blip?

Morphine first day, tramadol next day, tramadol after much begging the next day on the strict understanding it was 'only once'.

Paracetamol and morphine. Doctor wrote me a prescription for strong painkillers to take home and the bitch of a midwife wouldn't give them to me!

YerAWizardHarry · 10/02/2016 15:39

Paracetamol and diclofenac. This was 3 years ago

wonkylegs · 10/02/2016 15:52

I wasn't offered any other Painrelief BUT I was already on prescribed pain meds (for a medical condition) which they checked I had a supply of with me.

I remember looking at the midwife when I got to the ward after my 2nd c section, when she gave me ibuprofen and paracetamol, thinking that she must be having a laugh.
It was no where near enough pain relief.

After my first section they gave me morphine, and I was in no pain at all, understandably. But then had paracetamol the next day.

I recovered much better after the first one. I was in pain for six weeks after.

I also had a drain in after the second and i&p was crap for that.

Nothing. They gave me Paracetamol for a temp of 38, and when I asked for a pain killer an hour later they said the Paracetamol was for the pain too. When I asked for something stronger I got Morphine and vomited. Codeine/Ibuprofen not on offer.

Rather frustrating. For other operations pain killers are written up as standard. Having to ask for stronger pain killers than Paracetamol less than ten hours post op grated a little.

I've had C section and a hysterectomy. Hysterectomy was worse but I could only take ibuprofen and paracetamol for both surgeries, as anything morphine based makes me ill and very sick.

It was offered though, I just chose not to take it.

The rolling over in bed was awful and they make it sound so easy Hmm

I'm really shocked by this. I had diamorph through the epidural, a disclose at suppository (I think, like a pp, I vaguely recall the anaesthetist mentioning it). I then got 20 of MST twice a day for two days plus paracetamol and diclofenac 3-4 times a day and was discharged on those and had a sevredol when I was sore the day after. So I got shit loads of drugs compared to some of you, and the only one I had to ask for was the sevredol and only had to ask once.
They were also pretty good about helping me til I got my legs back.

ClutterofStarlings · 10/02/2016 17:12

Disclose at should read diclofenac sorry. I would balance it out by saying that the antenatal care leading up to EMCS was a bit rubbish, so I suppose this balanced it out a bit. They also gave me some lactulose at my request.

Morphine, tramadol, ibuprofen and paracetamol.

I had a nurse who was a twat about my c section, she deliberately withheld pain relief because she "decided I was making a fuss".

Rinceoir · 10/02/2016 20:10

Paracetamol and ibuprofen here. After failed forceps, emcs, uterine tear and uterine infection. Spinal didn't wear off for about 18hours but after that was in a lot of pain. Couldn't get into bed due to pain on the first night so sat awake in chair holding DD as I knew I wouldn't be able to pick her up again. It was horrible. I'm a doctor and give more analgesia to patients after minor procedures, and knew exactly what was and wasn't safe so I was very annoyed. I did raise the issue formally so I hope things have improved in the hospital I was in at least.

Tootsieglitterballs · 10/02/2016 20:30

Paracetamol and ibuprofen , but went to the docs and got given codeine. Much better!

TheCatsMeow · 10/02/2016 20:44

Rin I complained and was told later that the person had been spoken to and reminded not to withhold pain relief so hopefully they did the same

Squiby1976 · 11/02/2016 17:11

I had a mobile epidural for 4 days lost c section. Also had volterol and codiene. Pain was very well managed and I don't recall having any really.
