Hiya, my due date is tomorrow, found out on tuesday that the baby is back to back, as he,s already 3/5 engaged it is probably unlikely he will move!
Have heard horror stories about back to back births and was wondering a few things:

First of all is it more likely i will need induced, or can labour still start naturally??

Is the birth really awful, or can you manage without an epidural? it is my third child and i have never had an epidural, and dont wish one, so want to know that the pain will be managable with out it!

thanks in advance!!

thanks everyone for the reasurrance. O had a water birth with dd...well I laboured in water, got to 10 cm's and contractions stopped so I needed sytocin to help. Hopefully I can do the same again in water as it defo helped with the pain. Just needed g&a. Suppose its fear of the unknown iykwim..Have given birth before but different set of conditions..!!!

hunkermunker · 26/12/2006 19:50

Strictly speaking it is pain relief though, Pruni

sssshhhhhhhhhhh... sometimes the reason we stop at 10cms is because the body needs a rest. If this happens again I'd suggest you got out of the water and have a nap! Trust me.. when your body decides it's time for the baby you'll need all the energy you will have gained from the rest!

Labour with DS started off as back to back. I didn't have an epidural (just diamorphine and gas and air), and it wasn't great but wasn't that bad. The pre-labour bits before I got to 3xcm were rather long knackering and drawn out (but I imagine that wouldn't apply so much with the 3rd child).

SparklySnowflakeKid · 26/12/2006 20:08

I had OP VBAC and they didn't know til was fully dilated - left me for an hour to see if he would turn - but didn't - had epidural and ventouse (he was huge!) - didn't think I was very good at pushing LOL!

I was 10 days overdue - also if I had known was OP would have probably crawled around for those 10 days to help him turn and would have opted for a different position i.e. not flat on back during labour. Expecting no.3 in April and fully prepared for it! (ish)

Am going to ask to go for scan at 36 weeks to check size and position.

wise words frosty..thing is I think they were all concerned that I was at 10cm's for an age..one on the drip my contactions started thick and fast BUT I was pushing for around 2 hours. Luckily dh kept an eye on things and made sure they kept to their words..ie if she hasn't had baby by x time then foreceps are needed etc. Luckily he kept reminding them of such comments and in the end I think I thought this baby is being delievered whatever and now and without help..!! LOL..!!

Not sure if I would have been confident at resting as it all seemed so urgent iykwim..

FrostyTheSnowMarsLady · 27/12/2006 20:49

Shhhhhhh: Yes iswym... but that's the problem. At hospital everything becomes a time game. I've watched different clients stop at 10cm and where left alone, without the if x doesn't happen in y mins, they have all gone on to deliver safely and without intervention. We're always in such a rush! Babies come when they come. Of course there are times when intervention is necessary, but why do we have to start before it is? Sigh........

SparklySnowflakeKid · 28/12/2006 18:51

I wasn't left alone at all though my whole labour which was good - and for that hour they watched my contractions and ecg very carefully as his heart rate kept dropping...he didn't turn in that hour and when it was obvious I was rubbish at pushing after another hour they pulled him out a la ventouse - there didn't seem any hurry until this point and then three doctors/midwives tugged for England - it was almost comical - they called it 'moderate force'

SHHHHsantahasbeen · 29/12/2006 15:51

well I have been a good girl and have been sitting on my birthing ball every night. Not the most comfortable as I got the one from boots which is covered in massage spikes iykwim..! My bum resembles a darts board after much to dh's amusement..!! I have also tried to do thing on all 4's...ie cleaning the odd things but this is not the easiest of tasks while suffering with spd and sciatica..!!

MW appointment next tue so will see although I have resigned myself to the fact that ds2b will be a typical lazy boy ..!

Anyone any other suggestions..??

BTW Lollipopz any news on you..??? You have either had baby or are so far around 6 days overcooked..??? Tell all please.. XX

PanicPressiePants · 29/12/2006 15:57

Ds was back to back, and ALL my contractions were in my back and bottom, none at all in my belly, incredably painful and I did have to have an epidural. But it was a fairly quick birth.

However, thinking back I'd been having backache for ages, days and days before. And it was only when I couldn't take the back pain anymore and mentioned jokingly to dp that the pains were coming in waves every 3 mins that the penny dropped! Was 8cm dilated when we arrived at the hospital!!!

2quokkasandapeartree · 29/12/2006 16:11

my firstborn was back to back, and I did it naturally. It hurts but labour does, what ever position they're in. I did have a water birth which helped a great deal with the pain. I didn't realise until I was in labour, but apparently going on all fours helps?

ledodgychristmasjumper · 29/12/2006 16:12

Altjough my back to back labour was long....very long i don't think it hurt as much as my normal labour.

yomellamoHelly · 29/12/2006 21:56

Gave birth to ds2 11 days ago. He was back to back and 2 days early.
The labour was quick - was ready to push when I arrived at the hospital 3 hours after I felt something "pop" (but then ds1 was 4 hours start to finish).
But it took 4 hours to squeeze him out and I found it all really exhausting.
Midwife was continually trying to get me on my back (BIG no-no - made pain totally unbearable) and pulled a muscle struggling to get out of that position 'til dh helped me.
For me the pain was definitely all in my back and my (hip) bones for the entire labour - was one of the main reasons I was so keen to get to hospital as was totally different feeling to previous labour.
That said I did it without any pain relief, though could not have done that if I'd not had dh rubbing the base of my back (quite hard) almost continuously.
Seems a dim and distant mempry already though

mumatuks · 29/12/2006 22:21

Hi Lollipopz,

Please don't worry about your baby being back to back. All my 3 were posterior, and all three were born spontaneously, and no help needed. Infact they all turned with the contractions when I was in labour.

My third labour was slightly longer than my 2nd (7hrs from start to finish for DS3, yet only 4 hours for DS2) Anyway, in the end it was actually ten minutes pushing time, and he turned.

Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do great!

maltatheterrible · 04/01/2007 14:00

Has anyone heard from lollipopz please? I've looked through the birth announcements but can't find anything, surely she isn't STILL holding on??!
Fingers crossed she is tucked up at home after the worlds easiest birth, with more to think about than updating some people on the web
