What did you use for bleeding after birth?

I'm preparing my hospital bag and after-birth stuff:)
So what do/did people use for the bleeding after birth?

Tena pants?
Tena pads?
Night sanitary towels?
Maxi pads?

I've read some blogs and some used Tena pants, some used night towels. What's more practical? Or is it more personal preference?
Just wanted to see what the majority of mums used before I went out and got a load of pads/pants!!

Mothercare aloe Vera maternity towels. I have given birth six times, so tried loads. They are the best imho.

Yes to supermarket multipack knickers, do not bother with disposable ones.

I used maternity pads for the first 2 weeks (I just got them from tesco, £1 for a pack of 10. Certainly wasn't paying mothercare prices and the tesco ones were just as good). They were nice and soft, especially as I had a few tears. Then by the third week the bleeding slowed right down, so I just used always pads, the long ones. It was fine.

I would have about 100. I think I changed mine maybe 10 times a day as basically didn't want any type of infection so it's best to change as often as possible

Big soft maternity ones! I've heard the normal period ones with that plasticky layer can get stuck to your stitches (youch) and are also bathed in chemicals so the plain thick cotton maternity ones are best.

Luna7993 · 03/12/2015 17:51

If you have stitches then I don't recommend normal period pads as the lining can stick to the stitches. I used a mix of maternity pads and tena for the first week. Also chucked them in the freezer first for extra cooling comfort :) Bought a pack of black asda knickers in a size too big, like someone suggested above.
Both pregnancies I did not plan for enough and had to send hubby out to buy some more. He didn't like that.

I had stitches after the birth. I just used tesco maternity pads for the first 2 weeks, as they were cheap at £1 for a pack of 10, very soft and as comfortable as a pad will ever be. For the 3rd week the bleeding had nearly stopped so I just used normal always pads without wings. After that the bleeding had completely stopped

DowntonDiva · 29/09/2016 18:05

I went through about 10-12 a day. External stitches and a lot of bleeding needed to keep the area as clean as possible. Another vote for mothercare wings.

NickyEds · 29/09/2016 21:14

I also went through 10-12 a day with both babies. Thick maternity pads both times and sometimes doubled up. I was told not to use sanitary towels initially as the lining can stick to stitches and they absorb the blood in such a way that then mw couldn't tell how much bleeding there is. With ds I had quite a few stitches so changed regularly to avoid infection. With dd I had terrible after pains and whenever she latched on to feed (which was very often!)I could feel the blood flooding out (sorry if tmi)so just filled them quickly- I only bled for 10-12 days though.

schbittery · 29/09/2016 21:17

Massive sanitary pad x 2 them the nighttime pads after about 10 packets of the maternity ones. Massive black cotton pants, lots of them, dont buy the disposable maternity pants, really uncomfortable. Go massive, basically.

peaceloveandbiscuits · 29/09/2016 21:18

I think OP has probably finished bleeding now.

schbittery · 29/09/2016 21:21

lol.why no zombie warning? she could be on baby number 2?

NickyEds · 29/09/2016 21:27

Bah! Suckled in by a ZOMBIE thread!

Maternity pads. I had heavy bleeding

Waterlemon · 29/09/2016 21:39

I would advise trying a couple of different brands/types.

I dnot think I bleed excessively but I had quite bad tearing with huge ds2 and I found some brands more comfortable than others. With some of them, the top layer would seperate from the rest of the pad and stick to my stitches! Ouch! Others would bunch up in the middle, forming an uncomfortable ridge.

Tip top for stitches/tearing/sore lady bits - pour water over your bits as you pee. (I kept a jug in the bathroom)

Waterlemon · 29/09/2016 21:41

Gah! Well hopefully someone has found this old thread useful!

Halloweenbaby · 29/09/2016 22:32

Boots own maternity pads with a few drops of lavender oil. I did buy some morrisons own maternity pads when I ran out of the boots ones and although they were cheaper, they lost their stickiness so would flip and were far less comfortable than the boots ones.
