2 weeks. Make sure you have some cream to ease the pain.

DorothyDove · 28/10/2015 04:39

Definitely go to your GP for prescription stuff. It will heal them quicker and many contain local anaesthetic too. The poles were the worst thing about recovery with DS1 so I feel your pain - have got prescription cream ready and waiting now as DC2 is imminent and I can't bear to do it again!! As my wonderful GP said to me - this isn't something you have to just put up with. They won't go overnight but you can treat them. Good luck and congratulations on the arrival of your DC!

Thank you- it hadn't occurred to me to see GP as kind of assumed it was just something which would heel!!

Oh definitely see your Gp. You'll get cream you can get over the counter. Having piles is miserable and not what you need when you've got a new baby to look after.

Make sure you're drinking enough fluids and having some fibre in your diet (weetabix or something similar, jacket spud, fruit and veg, wholemeal bread) and make sure you're pottering around as well. Lack of activity can make it harder to go IYKWIM and you need it to be easy!
Feel better soon.

Ice is your friend. It shrunk mine as a temporary measure, and I had clusters of the fuckers. I was given diclofenac, and that seemed to shrink them more.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 30/10/2015 19:42

Mine never really went away after dc1 sorry - they got much smaller and were just flaps of skin really with no pain etc after about 6 weeks. I'm now pregnant with dc3 at 35 weeks and they're feckin huge already. I will literally never ever get rid of them now :(

DrCoconut · 31/10/2015 02:09

Sitz bath helps. I had piles after all 3 DC.

blackteaplease · 31/10/2015 02:31

Do see your gp. They will go away by themselves in 2-4 weeks but you can get prescription ointment such as proctosedyly to ease the pain. My gp also prescribed a month of gentle laxatives to reduce constipation.

You need lots of water and a high fibre diet plus gentle exercise.

How're you doing now OP? I can say from my professional and personal experience that"it depends" (useful, I know!).

Well, if they are small and you can push them back in, they will probably go in 3-4 days. If they are rock hard and cannot be pushed back in, then anywhere from 2-12 weeks for them to go away by themselves. You can have a small procedure done to remove the hard lump inside them, and after this procedure you're looking at 3-5 days before they heal completely. The procedure involves a local anaesthetic which is a serious pinch, but provides good pain relief for about 1.5hrs. A small cut is made, which you won't feel, and the hard lump inside the hemorroid (the offending clot) is removed. It's a simple straightforward every day procedure and o ly takes a few minutes. You really should take oral painkillers at the same time as the local to provide pain relief for when the local wears off, which can be incredibly painful.

Applying ice, hot compresses and sugar altenately can help to reduce swelling of minor piles. While sugar is seriously messy, it does help quite a lot by osmotic effect.

Difene suppositories are your friend for a numb bum. Liquids and veggies only to eat, 2 Movicol a day and stay in or very close to bed and bathroom. Shower to clean and short soak in bath or sitz tub after every movement, and try to massage and push back in the lump every time. Avoid toilet paper, use wet wipes or cloth wipes. Don't use steroid containing creams for longer than seven days because from then on they worsen irritation. Glycerine suppositories can help if you feel the urge to go but are too scared to push (remind you of anything?!). When they get itchy DO NOT scratch. Rest a lot. Horizontal as much as possible. They can be seriously painful and do not underestimate how debilitating they are, it's not just you, ask for help and look after yourself.

Congratulations on the baby, and try not to do anything other than feed and focus on recovery.

BreeVDKamp · 31/10/2015 21:00

Still got one (only had one) 5 months on.

Congratulations on the baby though!! :)

NewBallsPlease00 · 31/10/2015 21:36

Thanks all they're still soft and sort of poke back but reappear moments later... This is so lovely.
I couldn't get into dr and have midwife on Monday so will see if she can prescribe or arrange phone collection of script...
Thanks for suggestions will be icing until then. Snack of choice is already apricots!!

Congratulations! My little boy was born on 24th Oct & mine are shrinking already, this is my 2nd DS & had similar recovery with the 1st, so there is hope. Doctoranova's post is amazingly comprehensive.

What I've used is diclofenac (horse strength anti inflammatory available on prescription, I just take one a day, tho you can have up to 3). Safe for Breastfeeding & great if you have stitches/bruising down there as well.

Loads of water, smoothies & fruit to keep everything moving.

Wet wipes dabbed to clean (do not rub!)

Don't lift or carry anything too heavy if you can avoid (I sit down to cuddle DS1, picking him up makes them way worse.

Try to let gravity do it's job when on the loo & resist pushing.

Good luck!
