Induction - help, don't know what to do!

Hi all
I've been told I'll be induced next Weds 13th as baby is measuring big. I will be 40+2 then but am measuring 2 wks ahead.
I have been looking into this and it seems the cons far outweigh the pros. Has anyone out there had a successful induction?

Just to let you know that I always measured about 7 weeks ahead... and that was with the singletons as well as with the DTs.

Here's hoping you go into labour naturally. Sorry, not a fan of inductions.

christmosschops30 · 05/12/2006 17:53

i was convinced of my dates to the day, but they measured me a week bigger.

I ended up being induced at 40+15 (their reckoning) only 40+7 for mine.

It was ok, better experience than my spontaneous labour with dd.

At only 40+2 surely you can hang on a bit, they didnt start getting twitchy with me until I was 2 weeks over

HTH

Unfortunately for me I'll be having the baby in Spain and they are much more keen to get babies out than in the UK - it's a tricky one....

I was induced with my first, 12 hour labour from very first niggle to him being born, once it got going properly it was quite intense and strong but it all went to plan, no medical intervention (except the actual induction) and he was healthy which was the main thing.

MKGnearlyimmaculateconception · 05/12/2006 18:16

I had a great induction. Very straight forward and complication free. From the time they gave me the drip to birth it was 12 hours, and only 6 hours of real labor.

It can go well or it can't but you won't know until it's happening.

mamijacacalys · 05/12/2006 18:23

Am with NativityJane - both mine induced (one lot of gel only on DS and one propess t-bag thingy only on DD) but had no further intervention with either aside from a few whiffs of gas and air at the end of the 1st stage.

On both, once I started 'pushing' in the 2nd stage didn't need any more gas and air, so didn't think it was that bad really! DS 8 hr lbr, DD 4 hrs. In each case, was probably like a 'normal' labour in all respects other than the very beginning.

From speaking to others, the 'intense' pains seem to come if you have the drip as well as the pessaries. Hopefully, like me, you won't need it and can proceed relatively 'normally'.

Good luck and HTH.

hmmmmmmmmm...........there was a recent thread on babies being measured big and then arriving at a smaller weight

have you had a scan ( although they can be inaccurate) and is this your first baby?

i measure 3 weeks ahead at 34 weeks and had a 7 lb 8 baby at exactly 40 weeks, spontaneous natural labour.

an induction is in itself a more medicalised procedure than a spontaneous labour and depending on your hospital protocols ( not familiar with the spanish system at all) you may not get an active birth which is preferable than one where you are confined to bed with monitors and drips.....

bebespain · 05/12/2006 20:35

That's just what bothers me Lulumama...Yes this is my first baby so really don't know what to expect at all. My last scan (1wk ago) was consistent with what they've told me for a while - two weeks bigger and just over 4kgs now...
I suppose until it happens you never know how it'll turn out - thanks for all your replies ladies

I was induced twice.

Get the epidural as soon as poss.

lulumama · 05/12/2006 21:00

ask for another scan

will they give you an internal to see if you are actually favorable for induction>?

santasweetdreamer · 05/12/2006 21:03

sorry for abrupt post, I'm in a foul mood.

good luck, you may sail through it. but if you do need drugs, I'd say take them.

Toady · 05/12/2006 21:04

Scans are notoriously inaccurate, if you do not want to be induced say NO, or maybe just call on the day and say you are ill put them off for another few days

BopScotch · 05/12/2006 21:09

Could you ask for a membrane sweep instead? Don't know about in spain, but I was offered one when DS was a week overdue, fortunately I didn't need it as he decided to arrive on his own

NineUnlikelyTales · 05/12/2006 21:14

You don't have to be induced unless you want to be - it is YOUR decision and your baby, no one else's. You can ask for more scans etc, to determine the size of the baby and ask lots of questions. For example, exactly how much 'too big' is the baby and what impact/risk would there be? Versus the risks of being induced and all the extra medicalisation that entails.

I was booked to be induced by my midwife at 41+5 without any discussion, so I simply refused and asked to see a consultant. They were very happy to arrange this and he was understanding of my wish not to be induced. We agreed to give it another week and in the end I went into spontaneous labour at 42+6 and gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

In the end it doesn't matter whether the doctors like to get babies out or not, the decision is yours. Best of luck with everything!
