Apologies for the gruesome & personal nature of this message, but hoping for some quick reassurance.

Just opened my bowels for the first time 2 days after the birth... had to strain a little and now I think I may have opened something up because although the blood flow had decreased it's now started being heavy & dark red again. Is this normal? I really can't remember the first time around...

That is not uncommon Georgia - better out than in Bleeding is usually heavier with subsequent babies - straining at the toilet can increase the flow just like with a period. It will sttle down again. As long as you are not soaking sanitary pads or passing clots you will be fine. How are you getting on otherwise?

Thank you for the quick response, mears

Feeling much fitter than I expected to be about now, to be honest. Still a bit sore and knackered, obviously, but doing okay!

Ooh - can I hijack instead of starting a new thread now you've got your answer G?

I'm 15 days post c-section. Had moderate lochiafor first 8 days, then stopped, but 4 days ago, and again today I am bleeding really heavily (and I mean reall -blood is literally pouring out of me at times, but intermitently) It's very dark brown, so dh reassured me I wasn't bleeding to death, but is this normal? And how much longer will it go on for?

Lisa78 · 14/05/2004 14:42

Hi Georgina and Prufrock
Don't know how normal it is, but both these things happened to me too - and I am still here!
HTH

PS - Georgina, what did you expect after giving birth to 9 babies at once!!!!

Prufrock, this happened to me after my second everytime I did something strenuous: like lift my eldest up the stairs or walk too far. Used to frighten the life out of me, but my midwife said (just as Mears has done) that unless I was passing clots I should be OK, but just to rest more!!!(Ha, ha, ha)
