After birth of ds2 (first natural-ish delivery) - when I stood up in the morning - wee literally gushed out of me before I had any idea it was happening! I did have my own room/bathroom luckily - but is this normal??? I do pelvic floor excerises like a good girl but nothing prepared me for that. am expecting no.3 and would be very suprised to get luxury of private room again - and was worried about standing up and it happening in middle of ward - no-one has mentioned it before...ever...????? Do I ask for a bedpan and be done with it???

I had an epidural and in-out catheter.

Please god let it have happened to someone else!

Do you think the catheter may have had something to do with it? I was a bit shocked at the, ahem, gushing after my catheter was taken out after my C/Ss ....

WeFrizyouamerrychristmas · 03/12/2006 21:33

had normal birth here, no catheter and no gushing, in fact seem to remember hospital won't let you out unless you've wee'd, might be one for Mears this?

merrylissiemas · 03/12/2006 21:34

it sounds like the catheter

Quootiepie · 03/12/2006 21:35

OH yes - I had my catherter out, sat on the loo... and didnt squeeze... out it came.... on and on and on. I couldnt have stopped it for love nor money! Next time was better, and after a few times I was totally normal again

southeastastra · 03/12/2006 21:35

i had a catheter it was awful! i tried to pull it out.

LemonTart · 03/12/2006 21:36

cornflakeKid - don?t panic. It could well be a temporary thing - with all the swelling and bruising that can happen, temporary nerve damage etc, it isn?t that unnusual. I was very worried about my bladder and pelvic floor being shot forever as it just wasn?t working fully (had little warning sensation that bladder was full and "stress" incontinence - a little leakage when I coughed/sneezed etc) Got better over several months. The needing to pee sensation came back very quickly.
Tell your mw and they can give you specific exercises and if necessary run tests to check out if there is any more serious damage that needs attention

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 03/12/2006 21:39

Didn't have the gushing but I do remember the first time being very odd. What I do remember is the first time I tried to pull in my pelvic floor about 2 days after having ds. Still laugh about it now as there was no pelvic floor - it was like it had just disappeared!!!

CornflakeKid · 03/12/2006 21:47

I am so pleased not just me! LemonTart - this happened 3 1/2 years ago - I was worried about it happening again in April when no.3 arrives - but will mention it to the midwife this time - maybe before I stand up!

Thanks for all your help!

Had rather large episiotomy aswell - didn't help the situation...!!!

It's happened to me too. It's just due to the trauma of the birth on your nether regions you temporarily lose the sensation of needing to wee so you only realise when it's too late. Why don't they tell you these things beforehand ?

bebespain · 04/12/2006 14:17

Hi there

Please don't mind me asking but for those of you who've had an epidural, was the catheter bit painful? I don't really want an epi but remaining with an open mind even so I am scared to death about that bit!

poppiesinalinewithtinsel · 04/12/2006 14:19

they put the catheter in when the epidural is working so you won't feel it.

PinkTinsel · 04/12/2006 14:19

they wouldn't let me off the delivery ward til i'd peed and i didn'thave a catheter or anything

LadyOfThePoinsettias · 04/12/2006 14:21

i had to pee both times to be freed! lol

Gingerbear · 04/12/2006 14:23

I had a c-section and a catheter. My bag looked like a tequila sunrise (red at the bottom, orange then yellow at the top, perhaps it was a tequilla sunset)
I coughed and the catheter shot out, along with a, ahem, fountain.
It is down to bruising and swelling apparently.

youngmum21 · 04/12/2006 15:28

hi

yeah it happened to me i had an epidural and an in out catherter after the birth when mw wheeled me to the shower i stood up and it just poured out and continued to do so eerytime i went to the loo for the first nite

MrsTittleMouse · 04/12/2006 21:09

Happened to me too.
Glad I'd put on a super-absorbant maternity pad, even so DH had to mop up the floor a bit. Pelvic floor is doing really well now though (at 7 weeks), only problem is needing to find a loo a bit quicker than before, no worries coughing etc.

KRabbit · 04/12/2006 23:05

Well I've just had a natural delivery (no catheter or epidural) and I have been weeing myself too so I guess its common!

The main problem I had with the first wee was that it STUNG like crazy!!! Really nasty and painful!

cheritongirl · 05/12/2006 21:10

bebespain - this isn't meant to sound macho but just wanted to say that i had to have a catheter after my homebirth a couple of weeks ago because i couldn't wee for love nor money (turned out there was a pint of wee in there!) but it really only hurt for a second and that was without any pain relief at all. As the midwife pointed out - you can permanently distend your bladder if it gets too full so a moment's pain is worth it rather than life of incontinence!

cheritongirl · 05/12/2006 21:11

sorry, forgot to say that weeing did really hurt for a few days - like Krabbit it really stung but it does get better!

MerryChristmasfromQV · 05/12/2006 21:15

Yes i had a catheter temporarily during labour without epidural and it wasnt painful at all. Just a bit of discomfort as it went in. Bladder emptied - it came out.

Not had the leaky bladder thing though!
