Pessary induction and homebirth?

123Castle · 30/09/2015 23:41

does anyone have experience of having a pessary induction then being able to return home for homebirth?

I am 41+3 and booked in for induction appointment on Friday.
My mother and my partners mum were both overdue by 2 weeks with us, so I'm inclined to push back for more time rather than have the pessary (if the pessary means hb not possible)

interested to hear from anyone with advice / anecdotes

I'm afraid they wouldn't let you have a planned home birth after you'd been given the pessary as you'd be classed as high risk and consultant led as soon as induction begun. They cannot of course prevent you from leaving the hospital at any time and they would be obliged to attend you at home but this wouldn't be recommended. I declined induction with my first until 42 weeks as I was hoping to use a midwifery led birthing centre but ended up being induced at 42+2 anyway. I was ready to pop by then and had a quick and easy delivery with only the pessary. Good Luck!

I declined the standard induction appointment, which was booked in for me at 40 + 13. Partly because I was planning a hb, and wanted to at least wait it out until 42 weeks, but also because I did a lot of reading up on induction and the pros and cons of that vs. waiting and decided I'd be happy to go with 'expectant monitoring' on a day-by-day basis from 42 weeks. I got a few raised eyebrows from the hospital mw to whom I declined the induction, but the community team were brilliant. Very supportive. Basically said while they didn't like doing hb after 42 weeks if I insisted they would attend and also to call them each morning I went past 42 weeks to let them know how I was doing, and what my intentions were re. my planned hb (so they could make sure they had a senior mw available to attend the birth).

As it was, my waters broke at 40+13 and DD was born, at home, in water, in the very small hours of 40 + 14. All very straightforward and she was under 7lbs, so I think she just took longer to cook (as I was pretty sure my due date was correct, give or take a day or two).

But, in answer to your question, I have no idea whether they let you have a hb after a pessary. This was never mentioned to me as an option, so I never thought to ask. Have you asked your mw?

Intersting topic, as actually, what would they do if you discahrged yourself after having the pessary?

I personally would be thinking of declining induction and opting for extra monitoring if the indication was there.

They won't allow hb after pessary. I suppose you could leave as pp says, but I wouldn't risk it personally.

Additionally I would not accept the pessary if you do end up being induced as imo it's rubbish. I'd go straight for the gel on your cervix which i ended up with a day after having the pessary anyway.

Depends what pessary they use as to whether you would become consultant led. Where I live you can have a pessary that is on a string that they can remove once things get going. You can then be transferred to the midwifery led unit so you could also go home x
