If you had a very quick, induced first delivery, how were your subsequent ones?

I was induced with DS and it was very quick. Took a few hours to get going, then I was examined at 2cm and 40 minutes later he was born. He came so fast that his heart rate dropped very low and so I had to have forceps with no pain relief - gas and air did nothing so I only had 2 puffs and no time for anything else.

It was fine and I feel good about the experience, I just want to know if it was quick because that's how I labour, or if it was quick because I was induced (propess pessary). I know it's probably impossible to say! But interested to hear others' experiences.

Just thinking about my next birth - part of me really likes the idea of a home birth, especially if it's going to be quick, I might not get to the hospital in time (I didn't feel the rise and ebb of contractions so had to be told when to push, so the whole 'when you're getting 4 contractions in 10 minutes, come in' wouldn't have worked for me), but I also do not like the idea of another emergency forceps situation if I'm at home and it's that quick! Scary thought.

I am still ruined from labour so can't have sex for a while yet, let alone TTC, but I have been wondering if it was quick because I was induced for a while.

My first was a slow induction ending in forceps. Second was another induction (propess pessary only) but a precipitate one! Took 30 minutes from 2cm to birth. Third baby my waters broke and contractions took ages to start but again from 2cm to birth was very quick (30-40mins). So for me I think it was quick because that's how I birth subsequent babies, not because of the induction (iykwim!)

Congrats by the way!

Thanks! Feels like ages ago, he's 4 months now.

I was induced in my first labour.
It went quickly, from 'unfavourable closed cervix' to waters breaking was 1hr 30 minutes. At this point midwives finally agreed to examine me again (until then they'd said I wasn't in labour- just having 'prostin pains') I was 9 cm. dd1 was born (by ventouse) 1 hour later.

My 2nd labour, I went into hospital reasonably early on due to my previous fast labour. On arrival I was 2cm so opted for an epidural. By the time it was sited (30 minutes) I was ready to push. Dd2 was born 2 pushes later.

Dd3 labour was much slower and longer. Joy!

How were you induced? Did you have just the gel? Or did you have the drip, also?

Elvish · 30/09/2015 17:40

I was induced for DC1, pessary only. It was put in at 5, I was told at 11 that I wasn't in labour and they'd probably give me another pessary in the morning. At about 2am my waters broke and DD was born just after 3.

With DC2 I had a home birth (which I decided to opt for as I was convinced I'd be overdue and called into the hospital for an induction anyway!). Called the midwife at 9 to say I thought I was in labour. Was told to have a bath and see what happened. Waters broke at about 11, called the midwife to get her to come out ASAP and she arrived in time to get just one glove on before DS arrived at 12....

Think DS was born just a couple of mins past midnight, so his DOB is the day after his predicted due date. I was completely unprepared as I thought I'd have another couple of weeks to get the cot out of the loft and sort out clothes Confused

Scary just a pessary... Don't know if it was a gel or not. They called it a 'propess' or something.

Wow loads of fast labours here!! I hope I'm just a fast labourer Smile

Hmmm, hard to judge what the best thing to do. I would go for home birth. I had two quick births, second induced was only 30 minutes. I'd be tempted for a home birth to avoid dashing to the hospital.

Might you need to be induced again?

BreeVDKamp · 30/09/2015 19:05

That's my thinking too but I didn't know you could have a home birth if you were induced? I was induced mainly because I was 11 days over but also because I'd had a lot of reduced movements (anterior placenta though). Did you have home births?

(Was hoping for outpatient induction but because of the movements I had to stay in. So I guess that would have turned into a home birth after induction, so surely that must be a thing!)

Nope, no inductions if you're having home births- the risk of needing intervention is too great.

If I were you, plan for a home birth, but if induced, stay put!

carolinemoon · 07/10/2015 21:58

I had pessary and then waters broken, DD1 was born 6 hours after they broke my waters.

With DD2 I was in hospital to be induced next day, felt some discomfort that prompted asking the midwife for paracetamol, DD2 was born 2 hours later. I wouldn't have made it to hospital if I wasn't already there, the pain built so quickly I can't see how I'd have sat in the car.

WiIdfire · 07/10/2015 22:02

I've only had one, but just wanted to say not all inductions are automatically fast. I had a Propess pessary and my son was born 42 hours later :-(
(despite the pessary causing hyperstimulation)

ShelaghTurner · 07/10/2015 22:05

I was induced with dd1 and went from nothing to baby in 4hrs. With dd2 I went into labour naturally and she was born 4hours later again. So exactly same length.

Gwlondon · 07/10/2015 22:22

Well done for thinking of this!

I was induced for my first. Pessary didn't work. Waters breaking didn't work so put on the drip. Went very quickly. Baby born 2 hours later starting from 1cm.

Second birth spontaneous start, 45 minutes of contractions and baby born.

Read about what you have to do if you have precipitous labours. Don't be worried but be prepared. My obstetricician told me about 1/3 of babies are born with their cord around their neck and you just unhook it.
