If you had to stay on post natal ward...

...what was the reason? I mean, why you couldn't be discharged the same day?

I was quite lucky with DS, had straightforward labour, some issues with placenta coming out but nothing major. He was born before 11am and we went home about 8pm. I was actually wondering why we couldn't go earlier, but I am Rh neg so they were waiting for lab results on DS's blood.

It's a bit early to be thinking about labour with DC2, as I'm only 17 weeks, but I wonder why they make you stay? What was your reason? And how long for?

DD1 monitoring blood sugars and i had high BP.
DD2 had a high temp. Nothing to do with the ward that was so hot you could barely breathe of course.

Plantpot83 · 29/09/2015 18:29

3 nights following forceps delivery, and DD and I being put on IV antibiotics because of an infection contracted during labour.

Lolly86 · 29/09/2015 18:49

Strayed 3 days, emergency c section pre eclampsia and a DD in nicu although she stayed in for 23 days

RolyPolierThanThou · 29/09/2015 19:04

Stayed seven days because large baby, forceps, pph, unexplained post partum incontinence requiring scans, x rays and a conveyor belt of consultants, none of whom could explain to me why I couldn't even keep a catheter in.

newborn had nerve damage due to shoulder dystocia, crushing injuries oh his arm and cheekbone, then lost 14 per cent of his birth weight so no going home until he started gaining.

It was grim staying there for so long.

Second birth saw me go home after 6 hours.

Third birth was at home.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 29/09/2015 19:06

Forceps. They wanted to keep me in but I asked to be discharged. Since I'd given birth at 3am I pointed out I'd been in as long as many people who did stay overnight. Consultant was happy and off I went

Sorry, slightly off point. But just to say an instrumental doesn't inevitably mean staying in.

VenusVanDamme · 29/09/2015 19:08

5 days due to pre-eclampsia which wasn't settling down post-birth. Was having blood taken a couple of times a day, liver scans as my liver function was shit and blood pressure monitored through the night too (no sleep!).

DS was in SCBU for 16 days (premature due to being induced for the above) so I was home before him and my extended stay without my baby didn't get me a single room - utter hell. I just stayed on SCBU for as long as possible during the day.

Lunastarfish · 29/09/2015 19:12

I gave birth early evening after a 3 day labour. I kept vomiting during labour so was starving, dehydrated and exhausted after labour. Even if I could have been discharged I would have asked to stay.

I was lucky enough to get a private room and stayed 24 hours after birth but was ready to leave after about 18 hours (my blood pressure went crazy so was kept in a bit longer)

HeadDreamer · 29/09/2015 19:14

I stayed one night for both because they were both born in the evening. The local hospital doesn't discharge in the evening.

Squashybanana · 29/09/2015 19:18

All my kids choked on their mucous repeatedly and stopped breathing for their first 48 hours, plus 3 had antibiotics and had to wait for clear blood tests for group b strep.

CultureSucksDownWords · 29/09/2015 19:23

Group b strep infection for DS and womb infection for me. Also a subsequent non-healing constantly weeping c section wound. Had a private room after the first day as I was distressed at being on general post natal when DS was in SCBU. Spent 3 days in post natal room then moved to a transitional care ward (4 bays) to transition DS from SCBU to ordinary level of care and was there for another 4 days until DS had had all his intravenous antibiotics and his cannula could be removed.

HippyChickMama · 29/09/2015 19:27

Dc1 emcs with 850ml blood loss, 3 day stay
Dc2 3rd degree tear, pph, 24 hour stay

MrsAukerman · 29/09/2015 19:32

IV antibiotics for baby due to mismanagement of labour by the hospital.
Then he'd lost more than the arbitrary 10%.

Whoami24601 · 29/09/2015 19:42

I had to stay in both times because I give birth to lazy babies - neither would eat at all!! I felt like a bit of a fraud, as otherwise we were all fine. DD has gone down in legend for the ways we used to have to wake her for a feed in those first weeks - naked with ice cubes (and even then it didn't always work!) Grin

MrsB1988 · 29/09/2015 20:18

Blood loss during labour and problems with breast feeding. DD was latching on fine but she loved having her hand by her face so she latched on and then pushed herself of within a few seconds. Born 5.30 am sat morning went home Sunday tea time

museumum · 29/09/2015 20:24

I was discharged by mlu but transferred to post natal ward to wait for a repeat of the Coombs test as I'm rh neg and ds is positive and the first Coombs test was inconclusive.

Bodicea · 29/09/2015 21:18

3 days, 2 nights. Had third degree tear.
I could have probably gone after the first night but I was struggling with breastfeeding and the ward was relatively quiet so they recommended I stay another night for the extra breastfeeding support.

Scattymum101 · 29/09/2015 21:58

I had dd1 at 11am. Should have been discharged that afternoon but they were understaffed and no one came round to do the checks to let us go home so I and to stay overnight. Was so annoyed.

Second baby was a home birth phew.

simplydivine05 · 29/09/2015 22:01

3 weeks prem (by their dates not mine) although a healthy weight. Feeding problems due to pethidine making ds sleepy fir the first few hours. Had two nights of torture in that place! You cannot rest in a room with 5 other women and babies! Born at 10:22am Monday morning but was Wednesday evening before we were allowed to go. Not really sure why in the end but maybe because I didn't really know what I was doing!

BackforGood · 29/09/2015 22:06

They didn't "make" me stay, they "allowed" me to stay. Hmm
I stayed because I wasn't ready to be at home with my baby. I wasn't well enough.

NerrSnerr · 29/09/2015 22:06

I had a c section and then a pph, I needed a transfusion. I was in for 4 days.

Pobspits · 29/09/2015 22:07

With dd I had a PPH and then dd also had early onset jaundice

I can't actually remember with ds I think it was something to do with him having a low temperature??

Ivytheterrible · 29/09/2015 22:08

9 night stay due to pph and general anaesthetic for manual placenta removal. DD in neonatal for 3 days and then on antibiotics for another 3 days.

FaFoutis · 29/09/2015 22:09

pre-eclampsia. 10 days.

I got my own room (en suite) so it was OK.

MinesAPintOfTea · 29/09/2015 22:11

1 night after a 4day induction and forceps. It took me over 24 hours to manage to wee.

treaclesoda · 29/09/2015 22:12

DC1, was in hospital for 6 days post birth (and 2 before birth). Combination of reasons - traumatic emcs, haemorrhage, infected wound, severe anaemia leading to palpitations, very low blood pressure plus baby was starving as I was trying unsuccessfully to breastfeed. They were amongst the worst days of my life, truly hellish.

DC2, another emcs, I'm not really sure tbh. Was in for 5 days and would have given anything to be allowed home, although the experience was nowhere near as awful as first time round.
