Breastfeeding advice from Health Visitor- Can this be right??

Have just been told by the health visitor that as I am breastfeeding I shouldnt be eating pate or unpasterised & blue cheese- thought this was just in pregnancy but she said it was new advice from the NCt- Who I cant get in touch with to check. Has anyone else been told this.
Also been told that should start weaning next month when DS is 12 weeks old as he is large- I dont think he is overly big- he is 7 weeks now and just over 12lbs. Surely this cant be right?? Is she just being a crap HV- cause I think she is so wrong and am seriously peeved!!

I am not saying that you shouldn't eat unpasturisd cheeses etc - I am saying that there have been articles in medical research journals linking various lurgies to breastmilk/maternal cheese intake - such as this one. I remember reading a similar article whilst still a health visitor myself. I personally think that contamination risks are minimal.

Fwit, I am in France and ate cheese and paté (and oysters!) whilst breastfeeding.

why the exclamation mark for oysters? I never knew there was a problem with seafood and bf.

I weaned ds at 15 weeks, but that was 4 years ago when the roccomendation was 4 mths. I waited till 6 mths with dd and I don't know wether it was just coinsidence but she was much happier weaning and eating than ds was. 12 weeks is FAR TOO early. Even if he is big or hungry, I don't think solids is the answer.

boboggglimpopo (thats a hard one to write) I am in France too, where abouts are you, if you don't mind me asking. I'm in the Charante, dept 16.

Another thing to remember is that weaning because a baby seems hungry is counterproductive. Milk has far more calories and nutrient than weaning foods. Giving them baby rice fills then up but they then can't fit in the milk they need. The answer to hungry babies before 6 months is more milk, not solids.

hear hear, thats exactly what I was trying to say.

It's bollocks, sorry but I am soooo looking forward to eating blue cheese once I have had the babay even though I will be breastfeeding. I have checked a million times that it is ok to do and I did it with the other 2. I miss pate and blue cheese soooo much when pregnant that I would know if I also had to avoid when pg.

I feel really sorry for you lot who seem to have so many shite HV's. mine is wonderful and kind and everything she says makes sense.

Trinityrhino · 30/11/2006 12:48

*when brestfeeding, it should say at the end of the first paragraph, duh lol

Trinityrhino · 30/11/2006 12:48

or breastfeeding even

stumpydog · 30/11/2006 12:54

i have breastfed 5 children and took the opportunity to stuff my face with every kind of food possible with no probs ( apart from one year when i couldn't eat anything dairy cos of a dairy allergic baby).as for starting solids, i took my cue from the baby - when they could reach out and grab bits of food, i started them on very small amounts

My DD went off the centiles she was so massive and the advise is still after 6 months, she did not actually wean until 8 months and was fine!
