Would you VBAC if you had never laboured?

I had an emergency section for placenta praevia at 37 weeks. DC2 is due 23 months later and its decision time.

Just wondering if anyone went for Vbac having never laboured... Not sure if this reduces your chances of success or not!

Just posting to follow as my first DC was breech and I'm now wondering what comes next... Only early days for me so lots of time to think but interested in views.

I tried - had a section due to fetal distress, no labour.
It's a tough one as I had no idea how i would labour, but thought no reason not to try as it was effectively my first labour, albeit with extra monitoring and a scar.

In the end I went a week over, was in slow labour for 80 hours, hospital for the last 36 until a midwife finally put an end to it and I ended up with a semi planned section again.

I'm glad I tried, but wish I hadn't spent so much of my pregnancy worrying about the choice. My section was fine, out within 30 hours and recovered well. If I have another I'm going straight for a section.

I guess my point is - it will be treated as a first labour so no known reason it wouldn't be successful - but first labours can be long and you will have the added complication of the scar, and the option of a section will always be in the back of yours and your medical professionals mind. Making the decision to vbac or not also added stress to my pregnancy. My advice would be to try not to get stressed about the decision itself, and go in prepared that you might end up with another section anyway. But no reason not to try.

I had an EMCS with no 'natural' labour for DS (I was induced and had an epidural so I couldn't feel anything and never got dilated enough to push anyway). I'm now pregnant again, and if possible I want to try for a VBAC. I want to know what labour feels like. I realise I may regret this.... Wink

A good VBAC story for you.

I had a VBAC after a cs first time round as my dd was breech. I figured I may as well try as I really didn't enjoy my recovery time after my cs and felt strangely disconnected from my dd for about 6 weeks after the birth. My VBAC was amazing. I was in labour for 18 hours and I ended up having an epidural but I absolutely loved it. I felt so good afterwards and had a massive rush of love for my ds unlike first time round when I felt sick and rubbish for weeks.

Same situation as you OP. I had an EMCS at 35 weeks with DC1, now 30 weeks with DC2.
Having had a labour before does increase the success rate or VBAC, so the no labour is a factor but as others have said it'll be a first labour. Although you might have a time limit. If I VBAC (TBC) I'll be allowed 12 hours max and dilating so much per hour.

I found the download on the RCOG website useful for risk factors etc www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/guidelines/gtg45/

You do have a lower chance of VBAC if you've not given birth vaginally, although that's only one of several factors that influence the odds. The risk of rupture is also higher when you have two pregnancies as close together as you have, so in your shoes I wouldn't consider VBAC tbh. But you may feel differently.

Hi I was in the same position as you on my second. Best choice I made was having a VBAC! But it's not for everyone your best choice is to speak to your midwife as she has your records and will help you make the best decision for you and baby! My VBAC wasn't the best ended up having forceps but wouldn't change it for anything better than a c section if you ask me but yet again we are all different :) and yes rupture can happen but not always I only had 15 month between mine and was fine.

Beyourbest · 20/08/2015 23:27

I had a VBAC on my second child and laboured for 10 hours and was sent for a emergency section as my old section scar was rupturing, I was happy to have a section anyway so suited me fine, best of luck.

I did and it worked out well for me. I changed my mind half way through 2nd pregnancy. I had a very traumatic EMCS with no labour for dc1. dc2 looked like it might be a cs too right down to crowning but wax so glad I and the doctor and midwife gave it the chance. I was told that if it had ben a busy night they would have just whisked me off to surgery. Recovery for me was much quicker and very good for me psychologically.

I'm currently pregnant with my second having had a planned section with my DS. My midwife has informed me that I will be a good candidate for a VBAC so it's great to hear some positive stories.

ladydepp · 21/08/2015 00:46

I had EMCS with first due to severe pre-eclampsia. Really wanted a VBAC for second and did get it but consultant was not massively keen! I ended up being induced after waters had broken (naturally) for over 24 hours. The pushing was brutal but short.

Going home next day after the VBAC was amazing, so glad the consultant gave me the chance!

Good luck

I had a c section with my first after a failed induction. Two days after being induced I wasn't even 2cm dilated.

Wanted a vbacs with my second. Was booked a c section 10 days past my due date if I didn't start on my own.

I didn't start on my own so had the section and my beautiful baby girl was born :)
