Birth Centre - First baby

I'm 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby and have decided to go to Caerphilly Birthing Centre. This is a stand alone centre. We live in a small village just outside Caerphilly and the CBC is about 5 mins from us.

The other choice is a 30 minute drive to the major University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff but as I am terrified of hospitals (phobia) I really don't want to go there. We visited the hospital birth centre and labour ward and REALLY didn't like it at all. It was shabby and not very homely or comfortable at all.

CBC is lovely, small warm homely and cosy and I've had all my ante natals there and know all the midwives (Haven't had one ante natal at the UHW in Cardiff and know none of the staff at all) - as I'm so scared of giving birth I feel I'd be more relaxed and able to cope in a small cosy familliar environment. About 48% of their mothers are first timers.

Trouble is I'm gettng grief from relatives/friends who say its terribly "dangerous" to have baby number 1 outside of a hospital environment and I won't be able to do it without an epidural etc etc (can't have one in the birth centre). They aren't taking into account my fears and feelings on the matter.

As I really would not cope with going to a big hospital (would freak out and have massive panic attacks as I'm so scared of those places and UHW isn't very nice) I really want to know that I'm doing the right thing by going to CBC. I haven't had any problems in pregnancy and am not high risk in any way.

go for it. im a doula and think this is one of the best types of care for a frist time mum. perfect for you if you are in 'that space' where you can give birth without an api etc. your body CAN do it.

good luck.

Thanks everyone.

Much to my surprise (and everyone else's!) its all over! I had my baby on the morning of 30 November at half pasty midnight - just two hours after arriving at the Birth Centre and being told I wasn't even in established labour yet!

Worst thing was being sent home time and time again when the pain was unbearable.

As it was I used practically no pain releif - a few odd puffs of gas and air but I didn't like the taste and was scared it would make me sick!

We didn't have time to use the Birthing pool in the end. The midwife examined me and found me to be fully dilated and said that I could start pushing!!

So I'm so glad I was able to give birth in the Birth Centre. I had no tears or stitches, have recovered very well (still slightly wobbly but getting better every day) and my baby is beautiful - he had Apgar scores of 9 and 10 and is a really healthy baby (cries a lot though!)

I've posted an announcement on Birth Announcements along with my birth story!

What an amazing labour - first time too - so pleased you got the birth you wanted. Congratulations!

PS What do the family say now??

MossletoeAndWine · 05/12/2006 19:16

KRabbit so pleased to read this as I am a first timer and have found out today the hospital I've chosen has a birth centre as part of it, although you have to go into the hosi if you want an epidural.

So I am seriously considering going a bit more "natural" although the thought of it scares the living *&@\ out of me, so thank you for your story!!

Will go and read your birth announcement now.

CONGRATULATIONS OF COURSE!!

The unknown is scary but having a natural (as possible) birth is less scary than having a birth full of intervention especially imo having an epidural. I had an epidural with my second and it was awful being told when to push when I could not feel anything, she ended up being pulled back up after a failed ventouse and forceps and then an emergency section.

When I had my third DS I just stuck with the gas and air and YES it did hurt but it was the most wonderful experience to feel myself give birth to my baby.

Read, read and read more about different techniques on giving birth naturally, it will be worth it.

BTW Congratulations KRabbit, will go and have a search on birth annoucements
