Transverse/breech at 36+ weeks....

Elibean · 11/11/2006 10:10

I'm currently booked in for a section at exactly 38 weeks, because they don't want to risk my going into labour if possible (in case of cord prolapse). Bump is nearly always transverse, with occasional forays into oblique/breech.
The OB said if labour started, or my waters broke, I should go straight to hospital - not stop to phone first. Now, 98% of me is totally relaxed about this and thinks thats very unlikely - dd1 was nowhere near ready to come out when I was induced (bp) at 39+3. But...
Have gone from constipated to loose, and having lots of BHs today...am contemplating at least getting my bag ready. Does anyone know if transverse or breech babies are less likely to come early, because there's no pressure from the head to trigger things??
Also, still get pressure on bladder, which is odd considering there's no head down there.
Suppose I'm trying to read my body in an unusual situation, and have nothing else to go by as dd was induced and I never went into labour...curious as to what others experience of tranny/breech might be like

tranny baby....not heard of one of those yet!!

how are you??? if baby transverse and not engaged..then less pressure on cervix,...so that would make sense..but the head engaging is not the only factor in triggering labour......

kep an eye on the BHs ..if they are coming regulary, rhythmically, getting stronger & accomplanied by backache & pain..and increasing in intensity.....get it checked out!

any show? loss of fluid?

diaorrhea might be a coincidence.....

Hi Lulu
Suspect I'm just being impatient - very uncomfortable these days, especially at night (bad bad pg itch, little rest) and look like I've swallowed a giant, unshelled peanut.
Backache yes, but more the sciatic sort - not periody.
Stomach ache yes, but probably because giant peanut is stretching against guts both sides.
Thanks for asking!

ps lots of Tranny babies on the Dec antenatal thread, for some reason we're good at growing them there...

tranny,,,,,! sounds so much nicer and more fun than transverse!!

hang on in there......xx

the last few weeks are so niggly and annoying......! then you get a lovely baby that makes up for it!!

try and milk it a bit though...get yourself waited on...!

Elibean, my ds would occasionly go into the transverse position.
I had quite a few false starts with him too and on one occasion (I was 39 weeks) they scanned me to check the positioning. At that point he was head down but I kept telling them that I could feel him turning into transverse and that you could actually see it because my stomach from the belly button down would sink in.

Anyway, when I did go into labour (10 days over), he was head down and when I started to push, he shot back up and went transverse again. The Dr's gave me a set time to let him move again and said if not it would be a CS. The Dr's and MW made me do lots of moving about from one side to another and pivoting on my bum (lovely image).
Luckily he did move back but was face up so needed forceps and episiotomy.

Elibean · 11/11/2006 11:01

Sparkly enchanting image! My dd was much the same - went head down very late, but bobbed back out and turned oblique when I was induced. I didnt' dilate at all, so she was a section in the end anyway.

Lulu, I am milking away when dh is around sadly he's on a course all day today, but I'll make up for it later! Thanks, you'll be the loveliest doula (have I got that right? You're planning on training?) xx

thanks!!!

am about to submit my written post coursework after agonising about it for the last month..keep tweaking it and changing bits...! ! then i get my certificate ( hopefully!) and i am good to go as a trainee doula!!!!!!!!!

gothicmama · 11/11/2006 11:09

dd was breach and I had pressure on my bladder etc. my waters also broke early on inlabour dd was born on her due date so don't know if thery are more or lesslikely to come early all I can say is that when you feel BH beoming proper contractions go in I would get your bag rady just incase and then try to chill

Elibean · 11/11/2006 11:17

Aha - thanks, gothicmama, I needed a push to get that bag done. Still think its wishful thinking, but you've motivated me!

Lulu, pity you didn't send it in a month or two earlier [ smile]

Ds #4 was breech for a while at about 35 weeks, he was my first to be so naughty, i went in to panic mode thinking i would not get my homebirth. I saw my chiropractor (who magically kept my sciatica at bay from 24 weeks) and he pushed on a pressure point on my tummy and 2 hours later ds flipped. He did flip back repeatedly but i perservered and eventually he stayed head down. Had him at home in 40 mins after seeing my chiro as he was 14 days late. I may not go for the induction chiro visit again with this baby (due in may)... could end up having it on the spot!

Try everything and at least you know you have given it your best shot, good luck

amyjade · 11/11/2006 14:11

I was going to post the exact same question Elibean.
I'm 37 weeks pregnant and due to have an elective section next Friday(17th). The baby is also in an oblique/breech position and i was wondering if labour could start early if there is no pressure from the head pressing on my cervix?
Last night i had around 5 hours of strong BH's but nothing more.
Secretly hoping it might come early as LO weights 8lb 12 already!!!!

Elibean · 11/11/2006 14:49

Wow, amyjade, thats impressive! Are you also under orders to get to hospital tout de suite if you do go into labour?

Largegin, thanks - your story sounds very similar to my mother's with both my sister and my brother, they flipped back and forth till the last minute. Unfortunately, one scan suggested I had a heartshaped uterus (septate) so its likely my babies just can't quite stay vertical, be it breech or cephalic. Still, I persevere with watching tv on all fours every evening!

mawbroon · 11/11/2006 15:27

Elibean - my ds was breech and after my cs it turned out that I also have a heart shaped uterus. I was also under instructions not to wait around before going to the hospital if labour started. I leaked some fluid at around 36 weeks and went into a panic packing my bag etc etc. I was due to see the consultant that day anyway and it turned out that ds must have been kicking me in the bladder as it was just pee . Anyway, none of this info is of any use to you, but I just wanted you to know that someone else was in the same boat as you last year and it all turned out fine!! We made it until the cs date at 39+1.
Good luck and I hope everything goes well for you.

jabberwocky · 11/11/2006 15:30

Eli, as you may remember ds was frank breech. Before I even knew that I used to joke that it felt like he was sitting on my bladder, so I totally understand what you are talking about. FWIW, I didn't get any contractions for about 14 hours after my water broke and even then they never got very intense.

HTH
jabber

jabberwocky · 11/11/2006 15:31

Just realized parts of that post will make no sense at all unless I also explain that ds was an undiagnosed breech! This is the reason for the wait, contractions, etc.

Elibean · 11/11/2006 17:27

Aha, thanks Jabber, that explains the constant nightime peeing - thats when she seems to fancy being breech and not tranny

Mawbroon, lol...here I am at 36 weeks, still not packed that dreaded bag, and I can just imagine the panic! Especially as dh would be hopeless at bringing the right things for me. Thanks for the reassurance - was he your first? My ob won't let me go to 39 weeks with this one (2nd) in case it goes faster. Though I bet it wouldn't...

OP posts:
mawbroon · 11/11/2006 19:38

Elibean- yes he was my first and I knew he was breech, but not about the heart shaped uterus. I was booked in for ECV but after a couple of prods, the consultant said that he would need to use an awful lot of force to turn ds and he wasn't prepared to do it. A scan had also revealed that he had one foot up by his head and the other tucked underneath. I would hazard a guess that ECV isn't an option for you with your heart shaped uterus (of course I may be wrong) - and anyway, you might not want to do that!!

Elibean · 11/11/2006 19:42

No, don't want to risk it...not very keen, my gut feeling is if this little one won't turn on her own (or via natural, positioning techniques) she needs not to. And OB not keen either.
That explains why you were 'allowed' to go to 39+ though - my consultant said it would be ok with a first, as likelihood of going into labour fast was much less. With a second, she's insisting on 38 weeks - still, this is a good size babe, so should be ok.

"my gut feeling" amazing thing womans intuition, stick with it.

Elibean · 11/11/2006 22:33

Thanks, Toady, I will

Whats even more amazing is I have an OB, who is a woman, who is also using her gut feelings!
