Giving birth in the car

Anyone else out there delivered their own baby while being driven to the hospital? We made it half way before my gorgeous daughter Joni made her apperance! That's after asking the midwife how we would be sure to make it to the hospital in time. She is my second child and two other folk I know didn't make it either with their seconds.

Joni now 12 weeks and doing fine.

Yes a friend of mine gave birth outside twickenham station in the car last year!

I delivered my own baby but not in the car - was a planned homebirth but the midwives didn't arrive in time and DH was busy fetching towels and looking after DS1. DS2 was born safe and sound.

Glad everything turned out well - good story to tell your DD!

Wow, outside a station is a bit public!! The midsives told me to hav a home birth if I go on to have a third. I would like one more to finish my family.

You must have had a very quick labour? I had 25 minutes from my waters breaking to the birth.

Someone on GMTV this morning gave birth in McDonalds car park. Think I am going to take up residency outside the hospital for the next 10 days just to be sure

MrsWednesday, me too.
My dh was busy keeping dd1 occupied, midwife was stuck in traffic.

congratulations rena....! what an exciting story to tell your daughter when she is older.....maybe a home birth for you next time?????

TuttiFrutti · 10/11/2006 11:45

My cousin gave birth in the car - she was lying on the back seat and her husband who was driving heard a thud, which was the baby falling onto the floor! Whole thing from start to finish apparently took about 10 minutes. They were on their way home from a restaurant and at first she thought it was indigestion!

Fantastic geekgrrl , so glad I'm not the only one. For some reason I always feel a bit daft when I tell people.

Rena, the homebirth was great - would definitely advise not leaving it too long to ring the midwife though. I'd do it again if we do go for number 3, although I'm not sure DH would. He was completetely freaked out by the whole thing - did you other 'hardcore birthers' find the same?

popsycal · 10/11/2006 12:12

i only just made it into the hospital
had it not been 7am on a sunday morning i would not have got there

ludaloo · 10/11/2006 12:18

my 3rd was almost born in the car....I had to get in a wheelchair right outside the hospital.
Two pushes and she was out!

helenhismadwife · 10/11/2006 18:46

I have caught one in the car park and picked one up that I didnt quite get there in time to catch mine were all in hospital

I have talked a few panicing dads through a delivery as well, one after the baby was born I was telling him not to panic and wrap it up to keep it warm. The community midwife later told me the placenta was wrapped in a towel and blanket cos the midwife on the phone had said to keep it warm

Rena did you stick her in the car seat
