My waters have broken at 35 weeks, what's going to happen

As the title says really. I'm 5 weeks early, my waters went this morning and I have no clue what to expect. I'm frightened for my little girl, none of my other children have been this early Sad I'm in hospital now, but it's a bit of a waiting game as I'm not really contracting yet.

Congratulations! My sons were 7lb 4oz and 6lb 3oz at full term!!

She clearly wanted to get on with it Grin

ILiveOnABuildsite · 15/05/2015 08:43

Oh what great news Gogi it brilliant. So glad it went so well for you. Enjoy your baby cuddles.

SnozzberryPie · 15/05/2015 08:57

Ahh congratulations!

Sounds like she was ready to come!

Apparently it can take your milk a bit longer to come in with a preemie - mine took 5 days. I didn't know that at the time and was worried that I wasn't going to be able to bf but it worked out fine in the end.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 15/05/2015 09:52

I was going to say what Snozzberry said, my milk took over a week to come in but only read that was a preemie thing much later on. Pump and/or cup feed if you need to to keep her weight up -that was why we were kept in so long.
And I think the cold thing is a preemie thing too, DS still loves his snowsuit at 8 months old, even in hot weather! I get some funny looks, but do what works for you and your baby

Congratulations

Nolim · 15/05/2015 10:01

My milk took ages to come in! I had to top up with formula but managed to ebf… by six months!! aka time to wean Angry

Grantaire · 15/05/2015 10:10

Aww congratulations. It's normal for your milk to take a few days to come in. They should keep a close eye on you. She's a fabulous weight, bigger than my 2nd who was born at 37 weeks and around the same size as my 39 weeker.

Hope you're home soon with the rest of the family. Do you have everything you need? Plenty of help around you?

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 15/05/2015 10:11

wow, that's a great weight for 35 weeks Grin I was going to add, my DTDs were born at 36 weeks (full term for twins) and were 3lbs7 and 4lbs 15 and aside from the smaller one spending a week or so in SCBU, they were both absolutely fine.

SoonToBeSix · 15/05/2015 11:07

Congratulations Flowers, maybe they got your due date wrong at the scan by a couple of weeks as she was such a good weight.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 15/05/2015 11:45

I had lots of people saying my due date must've been wrong with DS as he was a good weight and had hair. It wasn't, I knew my dates myself and dating scans aren't out by over a month. It's quite possible to have a 10lb full term baby, so 7lb premature babies can and do happen

SoonToBeSix · 15/05/2015 19:40

I only said maybe Abby, 37 weeks is full term I thought maybe the ops baby was two weeks early not five!

SoonToBeSix · 15/05/2015 19:41

Sorry that wasn't what I mean to post at all I got distracted. I meant the ops scan may have been out my two weeks not five.

drinkscabinet · 15/05/2015 20:00

Yay! Hope everything goes well for her over the next few days. DS (now 2) was born at 36 weeks, he was 7lb, 7 oz and bigger than all the term babies on the postnatal ward. We did end up in hospital for 9 days, he had a bit of a wobble, got very jaundiced and lost too much weigh after he was born, then took a month to regain his birth weight. He took a while to establish BFing but thankfully he was my third so the MWs let me get on with it and told the Paeds that I shouldn't supplement with formula and shouldn't express too much either so we didn't get into an oversupply situation, my milk came in at 3 days though and I had lots of milk, the advice might be different for someone else. He didn't really wake up until term and was delayed in a lot of things in comparison to his two older sisters who both were overdue (e.g. DD1 smiled at 5 weeks, he was more like 9). I think like a PP said if a baby is a late preemie then people expect them to be on the 'normal' developmental scale but I was very aware that he was consistently slower at starting to do things than his sisters for longer than you'd think.

drinkscabinet · 15/05/2015 20:03

Oh, and because of DS's weight everyone said 'Oh, you must have got your dates wrong'. No I didn't, I had two large term babies, and he was a lot smaller than them.

GoGiYerHeedAWobble · 16/05/2015 08:03

Thanks again all. She was taken to scbu as her breathing is a bit rattly and she is on fluids and antibiotics now so I'm not sure when she will get out. I'm managing to feed her 3 hourly but I'm not sure how much milk she is getting out, blood sugars have stabilised so she must be getting something. Looks like we will be in for a little while now though Sad

Her dad was 500 miles away (due up here next week, we thought we were organised) so had to make a mad dash back when she decided she was coming, and the only other help I have is my brother and SIL who are away next week (again we thought it would be ok as my babies have been 1-2 weeks early) so it's all fun and games here, but I'll muddle through, little miss wasn't waiting around for anyone to be organised Grin

My other children have all been nearer 9lb so although she is a good weight she still looks dinky to me.

Thank you all again, it' really put my mind at ease hearing so many positive stories Thanks

GoGi your milk won't 'come in' for a few days - at the moment your body will be producing wonderful colostrum - this is measured in drops! You will know when your milk 'comes in' - your breasts will feel much fuller, and you will see your baby swallowing much more often. But this will take a few days, possibly longer as you gave birth a bit early.

icclemunchy · 18/05/2015 00:12

Congratulations!!

Are you feeding her direct or pumping? I was encouraged to pump every 3 hours and ended up with a massive over supply once my milk came in (around day 4 I believe)

Fingers crossed your both home soon
