vbac - going overdue

AmyP · 06/11/2006 20:19

Hi there, I am planning on having a vbac but the consultant is not keen to induce if I go over due and would want to do a c-section in this case.

I wondered how many other ladies out there had a vbac and had their babies come early/on time and how many ended up having a c-section if they went overdue.

Sorry, that was a bit of a ramble! Interesting in hearing your experiences!

bang on time for mine! 3 hour 15 established labour ( 15 hours of contractions with no dilation, but we;ll gloss over that, OP baby!!!) VBAC a favourite subject of mine!!!!

when are you due? and why previous c.section?

Toady · 06/11/2006 20:39

Hello AmyP

Please remember you are not overdue until you go over 42 weeks.

Ask your consultant if you could have evidence why you would be at a higher risk if you went over forty weeks

Have you spoken to the ladies on this vbac forum There are plenty of ladies who have had successful VBAC/2/3 who have gone overdue according to the consultants. You will get loads of personal advice and studies, in fact there are ladies there now who are "overdue" and still hanging on.

If you did go overdue you can request a scan to check placenta and baby.

Remember that you are more likely to VBAC if you have no intervention. Your body will go into labour when you and baby are ready.

Please talk to the ladies on the VBAC forum.

BTW I had a VBAC2 last year but at 39+4 days.

I was 8 days overdue for my vbac, after a vd on due date, and a crash section 5 days late.
They were happy to let me go 12 days over.

Amy, I've had 3 vbacs so far and they have all been about three weeks overdue. The labours were text book though and i really believe it has to do with letting your body labour when it is ready, not when you or the medics are , best of luck, it can be very hard waiting

lulumama · 06/11/2006 20:46

i think annieannes expereince backs up what toady has said perfectly!!!! there is a lot to be said for spontaneous labour...

and there are gentle natural things you can do to encourafe your body to gear up for labour.....

the reason a medical induction is not a great idea after c.s is that the synthetic hormones can overstimulate the uterus which brings it;s own set of problems.....

i found visualising a natural birth helpful......i spent some quiet time every single day imagining my cervix dilating and opeening and the baby coming out....my c.s was failure to progress......

also did a lot of reasearch on VBAC, as i wanted to know i had tried everything to make sure it happened....mine was very positive.....

With my last one, I went three weeks overdue and ended up with another c-section.
The consultant and midwives were keen to induce, and told me there was no risk. I held out until my waters went at three weeks over, at which point I was really fed up and thought that an inductionwould probably work for me. My cervix was favourible, baby was engaged, and I was so tired. Anyway after all my effort I ended up with a c-section. I think if I had waited to go naturally, I could have avoided the c-section.
It shouldn't be a choice between going overdue and haveing a c-s.
You should be offered monitoring and allowed to have you baby naturally, that is the best way to have a v-bac.
If you agree to another c-section, it will be extremely difficult for you to push for a v-bac next time (if you want another). It has been a constant struggle for me.
You don't have to make a decision like that.x

annieanne · 06/11/2006 20:49

i got it in my head that i was going to have natural birth a c section was not an option again but mine was very positive

kdninas and Amy I had 2 sections before my vabcs. They do get a bit twitchy, but it can be done. It very much depends on why you needed the ections in the first place.

kdinas · 06/11/2006 20:54

Still here, still having period pains , still having a show.
Am quite happy, because I know things are happening. Also enjoying all the natural induction techniques, helps to pass the time if nothing else. Even my hip pain doesn't bother me now. x

lulumama · 06/11/2006 20:55

great kdinas... i had a show for a week!!!!!!!!!!!!! hope all goes well....you sound so positive and excited !

kittywits · 06/11/2006 20:56

dimcat · 06/11/2006 22:31

am due to have 3rd cs in a couple of days, its 5 yrs since my last & i was surprised to be told that I could go home on day 2.

Personally would prefer this as found hosp. environment dreadful on prev. 2 times

would value advice or thoughts on going home on day 2 from anyone who has experienced this. I'll be glad to get away from hosp infections - one of my friends picked up v. nasty bug during her stay - wound healing took ages for her.

all advice gratefully r'cd

dimcat · 06/11/2006 22:33

sorry just realised which thread i was in will re-post on gen board!

AmyP · 07/11/2006 11:03

Thanks everyone. My previous section was because of placenta praevia so no reason things shouldn't go smoothly this time. I am keen for nature to take its course so will wait as long as I can after due date if necessary. DH is a worry freak though and he is going to be harder to persuade than the doctors!!

I had vbac - 10 days late - was due to go into be induced at 12 days. Personally would rather be induced sooner rather than later - always worry something would happen to baby if leave it too long (too many bad things happened to family and friends and also both my ds's had very dodgy heart traces pre and during labour) - expecting third in April so hoping for another vbac. I think just eating as much as I possibly could kick started my labour last time!

lulumama · 07/11/2006 11:50

Hi Amy..if first c.s was for placenta praevia..there is no reason you can;t deliver vaginally this time..... letting nature take its course is highly recommended.....42 weeks is within the normal range of the EDD...... you can have regular monitoring when you are past your EDD to show DH (and yourself !) that all is well!!
