Birth centres

Both of my ds's were waterbirths in birth centres without complications, drugs, etc. ds1 was 9lb8oz which was too heavy for me to be allowed to have another child at that midwife-run birth centre. I managed to get into another birth centre for ds2 which had a higher weight restriction as it was within a hospital that had a maternity ward so there were doctors nearby if necessary. ds2 was 10lb1oz. I have not yet decided whether I might want to have a third child but if I did I would want it to be another water birth in a birth centre. Are there any that would have me?

don't know the answer...except to look at the birth centres near you and ask! and have you considered a home water birth?

Are you in New York? When I tried to have DS in an English birthing centre (but got transferred to hospital) someone gave birth the next day to a 12 pounder! I don't think they had any restrictions on possible weight.

They won't take you if they think you have had problemas though - they won't have me back for example.

if that;s the case . i know nothing about american birth system!! good luck with it all.......!

Well yes I am in NY at the moment but if we decide to have a third child I would wait until we got back to the UK as I don't like the sound of the system over here much! Gem13, what birthing centre was that and was the 12 pounder someone's first child? They will let anyone without complications have their first child in a birthing centre (-and they don't try to determine what the weight of the baby will be) but for all further children they take the previous one's weights into consideration and have a weight restriction. I don't much fancy a dry birth or a home water birth TBH. Home water births are a bit DIY for my liking!

Does anyone know what Edgware's weight limit is?

I have never heard of birth weight limit for birth centre... only in America but prove me wrong!

I think Hemel might be closed now (?) but you can certainly ask at the Alexandra birthing centre in Watford if you don't believe me. I wish there wasn't such a thing as it has been a PITA for me. I think it is to do with blood loss (-more with large babies?)

I am birthing at Edgware and there was no mention of birth weight at my booking appointmnet or in the information pack they gave me

NYceMummy · 07/11/2006 21:24

Hi Mrs Worry - is it your first baby? If not, then that sounds perfect!

I had 2 water births at Crowborough Birthing Centre - sensational. I'm not aware that they have a weight restriction - there were several 9lb babies in my post-natal group who's mummies also had their (mostly larger) second babies there. It's in East Sussex and commutable to London.
