Hi Brewster
I gave birth there 4 years ago. I was a low risk first pregnancy. Midwife on labour ward was fab - only laid me on my back once for an examination to see if I was dilated enough for the pool. After that was left alone - kneeling and lying/floating in the pool - just what I wanted. I hear they have some new birth centre rooms with pools as well now.
Stayed on postnatal ward for a couple of nights to establish breastfeeding - midwives were lovely but very over stretched.
Overall very happy!

Thanks Tara

The staff there saved the life of the Countess of Wessex (and her baby)when she had a placental abruption. She went back to have her second child and opened their new facilities fairly recently so a 'royal' seal of approval if that helps Wink

I gave birth there 2 years ago, they were absolutely brilliant, I wanted to stay on my back and bottle feed, and I was pleased they supported that. Also got great care for an operation and blood transfusion straight afterwards, my only negative was that the midwives were very busy on the postnatal ward so no one to help / advise me with a screaming baby when I didn't know what to do!

Brewster · 26/04/2015 20:10

so they don't badger you about not breast feeding?

I gave birth there two years ago, they were brilliant. Lovely and calm, very nice staff. My midwife was amazing, she knew I was tired and just sat there all throughout my labour stroking my leg while I slept. It was so soothing, she really helped keep dh calm. The antenatal ward is really good too, spent some time there last night with sil and she says they've been great too. Its all very clean too.

Only gripe was the understaffed postnatal ward, but it was Sunday night and they were on a smaller staff than normal.

I did with my first but it was 9.5 years ago so could be different now.

The staff are good and not domineering and font want you on your back :o but when I was there it was very, very, very, very, very busy!

I got left alone most of the time attached to an IV line (induction) - so my tip would be to make sure you have a birth partner able to be quite forceful about calling staff to come immediately if needed, and to take a water bottle you can get your birth partner to refill for you.

My DD has the name of one of the midwives as her middle name because she (the midwife) was very forceful with the doctor on duty about examining me right away when the doctor said it wasn't necessary and she'd be back in a couple of hours, resulting in me being rushed off for an immediate cesarean and no harm coming to dd!

Immediate car after the birth was brilliant, but I was kept in a while and the wards were very busy, took a long time for nurses to come when I buzzed (I was attached to equipment and couldn't get up initially) - maybe I just had bad luck but again I'd advise packing/ getting your dh/p/mum to bring in lots of bottled water so at least you aren't in the situation of buzzing for water if you're immobile at all after (or just pinned down by a baby trying to establish bf).

Take a device with headphones to block out snoring a bit if you might be in overnight!

Ah just saw you don't want to breadt feed - I'm sure they won't badger youto, they ddon't seem to have time to badger anyone on the post natal ward - as everyone says that part of the service is understaffed/ overstretched, though the actual delivery area is much better.

Brewster · 28/04/2015 08:32

Thanks.

Am hoping to be in and out in a couple of hours and not even see the postnatal ward.

In my last hospital it was straight after the birth still down in delivery that they badgered me about it. Very annoying .

Morning!
I had my little boy at FPH just over 2 weeks ago, and can honestly say that I cannot fault the care that I was given - they were brilliant! I was induced, so spent a day on the antenatal ward, which was spotless. I classed as a 'high risk' patient as I am 41 with a high BMI, so didn't see the new labour unit, but the 'normal' rooms on Central Delivery have been updated too and much more comfortable than when I had my daughter 10 years ago :) I had 2 midwives while I was waiting to deliver (due to shift change), and they were both amazing. Unfortunately after Ollie arrived my placenta didn't detach so I had to have a spinal block and manual extraction, but all the theatre staff were wonderful at making sure I was ok. I then spent the night and next day on postnatal which was ok, but very busy and warm! I was very grateful that the rules have changed so that partners can stay with you on both antenatal and postnatal wards now - although apparently the chairs are really uncomfy lol (welcome to our world eh? Lol!)
I am bottle feeding Ollie, and they were completely accepting of my decision from the get-go - no pressure at all, and I was not made to feel guilty in the slightest :)
X

Gave birth there 18 months ago. Midwives and Drs were all very good and the midwife was great at letting me do what I felt was best but my aftercare on the postnatal ward was horrible.

artyone · 01/05/2015 09:11

Just to clarify, I was in a lot of pain and couldn't get up to do things after a complicated birth, back then visiting hours were more restricted and I was in for 2 nights so I had no family to help for the night and part of the day. The staff treated me a bit like I was making a fuss for nothing. I complained several times of severe pain and no one seemed to believe me, a couple of Drs examined me and thought I was fine. A day after I was discharged I was back at the out of hours, turns out I had a raging infection by then which they had missed.

But the care on the labour ward was brilliant and I am probably having my next birth there.

Arkkorox · 01/05/2015 09:35

I had my baby at Royal Surrey but will definitely be having the next one at Frimley. Have only heard brilliant things about them and the aftercare I had at RSH was so awful I threatened to leave of my own accord unless they discharged me there and then on the second day.

Brewster · 01/05/2015 17:11

Thanks everyone.

we are considering a home birth now so hopefully if all goes to plan I won't ever even see the postnatal bit.
