My mum works on a maternity ward and we were discussing sections and I was saying that IMO going home 3 days after a section is too soon ( i have had 3). I was saying I thought it should be 4 minimum, and my mum said that the NHS actually now only pay for 2 days worth of care for someone who has had a section. Obviously they don't kick you out after 2 days if you still need to be there but I was shocked, that is disgusting. It is major surgery afterall.

If you are fit to leave and want to leave the next day then you can, if not then you don't have to!

No doctor will make you go home after a section if you are not ready - doctors prioritise patient care above budgets. But in any case, this is not how hospital budgets are set!

I had DS at Queen Charlotte 18 months ago. He was born on Thurs morning at 11:50 and I was discharged Saturday morning, so just under 2 days.

I was in for 5 days as baby was jaundiced. However I couldn't wait to leave as the bathrooms were disgustingly dirty and the hospital is chronically understaffed.

I decided for reasons of hygiene I would be much better at home! One of the midwives told me that didn't/shouldn't need painkillers just 6 hours after my section. It states in my notes that she apologised for the delay in getting them but believe me, she was anything but apologetic.

Haven't read all the threads but thank god it was only 2 days for me with my first one! I had a C section and on the first day could not stop crying to be let home, I knew I would have support of hubbie there. I had baby at 23:55 and the next morning noone told about breakfast or lunch so I didn't eat anything until hubbie came back in and went and found out. I know nurses were busy but they seemed to spend all the time looking after the babies when the mums went outside for cigggies! Baby cried all the time and I had no sleep in 2 days, luckily when we got home good as gold. Hoping when I have number 2 in and out!

OMG had 2 sections and was desperate to go home on the second day, but i was sooooo glad that they made me stay the full 4 days, otherwise i would have gone home and done things that i shouldn't have done and made myself worse. Iknow there was rumours before bout nhs was trying to introduce that unless you had an emergency section then you would have to pay towards it.

ingym23 · 03/11/2006 13:54

I haven't had a c-section myself, but my SIL who had a planned one for medical reasons was home 2 days later.

I had a vag birth and was in for more than a week...long assisted labour, then bub got jaundice then I got high blood pressure. By the day they finally let us out I was ready to climb the walls, and I did have my own room (no charge...)!

So I don't think it's a cut and dry issue, lots of factors need to be taken into account (leadup to the section, how you and bub are doing, the support available to you at home, (if you want to do it) how the bf is going...

If only that rule would have been in the Hospital where I had ys emergency section...I so wanted to get home and coldn't, well, unless I discharged myself against their advice, and at that time I had no fight left in me to argue anything....!
But, definately agree that for some women a longer stay is necessary and helpful and advisable!

blondehelen · 03/11/2006 14:54

hospitals are on something called payment by results and if you look here , you can look at what hospitals get paid and for how many days stay. days for c-s is 5 - 14 depending on complications

fizzbuzz · 03/11/2006 15:21

I stayed in 5 days, no problem. Have to say though, it was like being a single parent, you only get any help with baby for first day mainly, and then you are on your own basically. Made to feel I was causing trouble when I asked for help bathing dd. this was on day 3 and my legs were very wobbly still

finefatmama · 11/11/2006 04:22

had ds2 on monday morning, told to leave by wednesday but as there wasn't a bed crisis, i could leave in the evening. standard procedure, they said.

artyearl · 01/12/2006 21:38

am on day 18 at home with DD1 after emergency section - done sunday pm.out wed. am. cos was told 'doing well, all ok, good to go' but have ended up in more pain and discomfort as wound got infected, stupid locum dr. i saw in desperation stuck bug needle in swollen scar, prescribed wrong antibiotics which turned my milk practically radioactive so DD1 screamed house down for 48 hours solid until we decided to do formula! horrendous! ended up rushing back to hospital with gushing, weepy, yucky wound and just wishing i had stayed in longer given half the chance!

muma3 · 01/12/2006 21:42

my friend was told to leave the following day after her c/s. she refused and they then asked her every day for a 5 days. she left unwillingly on day 5
this was 4 weeks ago

muma3 · 01/12/2006 21:44

her main complain was that the staff handing out the food and hot drinks kept leaving them on table on end of bed where she wasnt able to reach it

buktus · 01/12/2006 21:45

ds1 i signed myself out within 24 hours and ds2 was 2 nights due to being in intensive care for 24 hours and dd 4 days
