Birth plan for an ELCS?

Has anyone done a birth plan for a section. I've got a few requests like being able to have skin to skin and possibly get to bf in theatre etc, but do they even look at birth plans if you're having a ELCS?

If so what did you put on it out of interest?

I had a planned csection and did skin to skin and breast feed as soon as I got to recovery not sure how practical it would be while you were still in theatre but you could always ask.
It was very quick not long at all until I was in the recovery room

for my EMCS (March 2010) I was asked in theatre if I wanted:
1.lights down.

  1. screen down to see baby delivered.
  2. Baby delivered onto my chest wiped or clean (they assumed I'd want him on my chest). I'm sure MW would have helped me feed if I'd asked.

for my ELCS (dec 2012) they I was offered the same. However he was clearly grunting so needed to go straight to NICU rather than have skin to skin. I didn't get to hold him but I did get to stroke him as soon as he was delivered, and then a quick kiss before he was whisked off.

I would ask on day, and in advance if you have a convenient appointment.

I was never asked to do one. I was asked if I wanted skin on skin and said no as I didn't even know what they meant Blush

I think it entirely depends on the hospital and the surgeon. Unfortunately it's their theatre although it's your birth. They get to make the final calls on what you want. I asked to have my own music and they were fine with that though said no one ever asked. They lowered the screen when she was born but then she was whisked away to the scales etc with DH. I never saw her naked until I needed to change her! But I know other people did.

This is the downside of ELCS. It has many upsides but ultimately I wasn't in control of the situation.

Ask your anaesthetist when you meet them.

It doesn't hurt.

FWIW, I've never seen anyone BF in theatre, as it'd be very difficult to do (sterile drapes, lying flat, monitors in the way etc) but you can immediately afterwards in recovery.

As for skin to skin, I've seen it done (again just ask), or if you're not feeling up to it, partners can do it instead whilst in theatre.

As long as everyone is ok, theatre teams can be remarkably accommodating!

Good luck!
