3+ C-sections?

Currently considering DC3. Have previously had EMCS for DD and ELCS for DS. Following ELCS the consultant told me that there was quite a lot of scar tissue, some of which he removed during the ELCS, and that he would advise that any future births would need to be by ELCS. Not sure whether this is because of the scar tissue or whether it was because for both DD and DS the dr needed forceps to get them out as their heads were awkwardly positioned in relation to my pelvis.

Am going to make an appointment to discuss with my GP but I was wondering whether anyone is aware of any particular risks of 3rd pregnancy after 2x CS, or whether there was a particular impact on recovery after third CS?

My sister had 3 C-sections waaay back (youngest child is now 20). She was told that she couldn't have another C-section because of the scar tissue.

You should look at the RCOG Green top guidelines for birth following previous CS. There's a list of risks and how they are affected by successive CS births. I think new guidelines are due out later this year.

www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/guidelines/gtg45/

I've had one ELCS and am also considering a third dc (who would be born by my second CS).

Thanks both. I will look into those guidelines again - when pregnant with my DS and considering whether VBAC or ELCS I was fortunate to have a lot of time with the consultant and to really tailor the risks of both options to my circumstances - the consultant thought the prospects of a successful VBAC were considerably less for me than the average of 70% or so which is what led me to choose ELCS. I would make the same choice again on the same or similar odds.

The rcog stats are useful and hopefully can inform your thinking
I have had 3 cs with no issues at all however no scar tissue problems after the first and second.

HaveYouTriedARewardChart · 25/03/2015 14:29

Oh and the third section was the easiest to recover from!

BalloonSlayer · 28/03/2015 11:56

I had three sections, all fine and easy to recover from. As HaveYouTried says, I think the third was the easiest to recover from. No one mentioned anything about scar tissue to me though, so maybe I didn't have much or any and that made it easier.

However, I wanted a c-section, so it was a very short conversation between me and the consultant:

"Another c-section?"
"Yes please."
"Goooood!"

Also, no one mentioned further babies to me but that was almost certainly because I was 43 and DC3 was unplanned! Grin

I've had 4 - I asked the surgeon during the 4th cs if a 5th would be possible and she said everything looked fine. I think these days it's all down to the individual rather than a particular cut off point. I'm not having any more btw I blame the hormones.

Oh and my 4th was much easier than my 3rd to recover from Smile
