advice for bruising after episiotomy

I gave birth to my beautiful DD 3 days ago. After a long labour and vontouse with episiotomy delivery I am feeling very bruised. I can hardly walk cant sit/lie down for long.

I love my daughter but other than feed her I cant do much.
My DH is doing changes etc, and I just sit here and cry as I feel so useless.

Does any one have any idea how to deal with bruising, or how long it will take me just to be able to move without crying?

I had these gel pads that you put in the freezer. They were amazing, I remember the sheer relief of putting one on. Ill try to remember what they're called.

I feel for you as the aftermath of my bazillion stitches from tears and episiotomy plus atrocious bruising was the only bad thing about the birth of my whopping first baby.

I followed the midwife's instructions and peed in the empty bath whilst running the hand held shower thingy over my poor parts.

I was also advised to lie on my bed for an hour or two very afternoon with nothing on my bottom half. This helped enormously.

I took no painkillers as I was breastfeeding and didn't feel happy to, but honestly, everything got better very quickly - the bruising in particular.

My post episiotomy healing was horrendous- couldn't really sit down, just stand up or lie down for days. Was in tears. DH had to do everything, I didn't change a nappy until he went back to work! However I do remember things beginning to get better at about day 6 so hang in there.
Congratulations!

My LO is now 5 weeks after a long labour and forceps/ episiotomy. I'd echo pretty much all the stuff on here (alternate paracetamol & ibuprofen every two hours once yr off the stronger painkillers/ lavender bath/ witchhazel on pads) but the thing that made a MASSIVE difference for me was having some gentle laxative for 5 days. i had it from a doc the day we left hosp (day 3 after birth) but only cos I asked - it;s the one thing i am cross about really as had gone thru lots of pain and worry the previous days and god knows why no MW/nurse asked me about whether i needed it. it was only an over the counter one i think and in hindsight i wld have got some more for another few days, as when i stopped i noticed the difference. but i am on iron tablets, so that means i was more likely to be constipated anyway i think?

hope yr feeling better - i felt horrid for a week, sore for another week, then pretty much okay from then on (odd twinges though now and then).

congratulations on the birth and the pain will ease up soon I;m sure!

Poor you! I had forceps & an episiotomy with my dd & felt awful. It does get better. Some suggestions:

  • definitely get some lactulose - I think I used it every day for about a month until I had the confidence to poo without it! Also prunes are good.
  • piles are the worst - see your Dr. I had to get suppositories to clear it up.
  • use moist toilet paper - more comfortable than dry.
  • baths with milk, tea tree & lavender oil helped me
  • let the area air dry as much as possible
  • when you decide to have sex again use plenty of lube. It will eventually feel normal again!

Above all enjoy your baby & well done you for bringing him/her into the world Smile
