Hi ladies I had a c section with my first and will be due my second exactly 18 months after my dd1. Will I automatically be allowed a c section? Does anyone know? Thank you!

Yes. But they'll encourage you to try vbac, which is well worth looking into. I had 2 sections 20 months apart (1 emergency and one failed vbac) and it was fine.

Congratulations Flowers

I had an em section with dc1 and a vbac with ds2 12 months later.

There's no guarantee you'll be offered a section but it's certainly worth talking to your midwife/consultant.

I had two sections 18 m apart with no problem on the second one.

They should allow you a cs this time no quibble if that is what you want.

Thank you for your quick responses. Good to hear some of you were allowed.

We were invited for a discussion about delivery after an emergency section for first baby. This took place about 19 weeks. I shall be having a planned section for the second - they were fine with whatever I chose but the risks of a planned section versus emergency are lower, plus my consultant said as there is a smaller age gap a VBAC is slightly more risky than if I had a longer age gap. Weighing it all up and what seemed like quite a high chance of another section anyway I am very happy with the plan. Be warned I was surprised that I found it upsetting to go over the facts of the first delivery even though I thought I'd accepted that both baby and I came out healthy and that was that - the midwife was nice and said it's a pretty common reaction. And come to think about it my health visitor had said early on it may be sensible to get a debrief before I got pregnant again....life got in the way of that though! Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy.

Ps I don't think there should be any question of whether you should be "allowed" or not.

houseofnerds · 21/03/2015 14:35

Depends what the reason for the first section was. If it was for something that is not repeated in the second pregnancy, there is no clinical reason for a cs, and you will probably be encouraged to vbac.

(No, I wasn't allowed a CS)

Depends on your consultant, but you can always ask.

Lilipot15 · 21/03/2015 15:25

I really think it is wrong to say that you can't be "allowed" another C-section. Google for Nice guidance VBAC and RCOG

I had two ELCS 19 months apart. No concerns were ever raised, no-one tried to convince me otherwise, and recovery was absolutely fine. Go for it!

Lilipot15 · 21/03/2015 15:28

Sorry posted too soon, look at "RCOG Birth after previous Caesarean birth".
Hope this helps. You should be offered an unbiased discussion with all the facts - the VBAC clinic we attended gave out a really good leaflet with pros and cons and I felt absolutely no pressure to go for VBAC. Not should you studentvera.
