Breastfeeding after c-section?

I am due to have my second baby by section beg Jan, a week before my due date after complications with the previous birth a year ago last July and since.

I am really worried about it but most worried about whether it will mean I cannot breastfeed this time. My MIL and SIL had emergency sections and said that they could not breastfeed. However I fed my DS for 8 months, after afew teething problems so have an idea what I am doing.

Has anyone breastfed their baby sucessfully after an elective section without going into labour before?

Any pos experiences?

You all sound like you had very succesful experiences. Why do people presume it is that much more difficult to bf after a cs I wonder?

You shoudl be able to have skin to skin contact with your baby after your Cs. I had no problems after mine 10 months ago. I wrote it in my birth paln and discussed it with then befroehand. In fact it was much easier than after the birth before which was a vaginal delivery.

They just took me through to recovery, which was nice and quiet and left me and dh alone. He popped baby onto me and he latched on straight away

Please dont feel guilty about having the CS if thats what the Drs recommend. Its not some kind of failure, just the safest thing for you and your baby in your circumstances

Thanks again. You have all been so lovely. Good to hear about good experiences!

I presumed I would have difficulties as my MIL and SIL said that you 'couldnt' bf after cs, bluejelly. Guess as the only people appart from one who had had a cs I thought that must be right. Only other was a woman in parentcraft classes last year who had emergency cs and managed to do 5 days but was so poorly and anaemic the doc sugested that it would be better for her and the baby if she didnt. Guess that was not just to do with the cs though.

Dragonhart - AFAIK its the removal of the placenta that triggers the hormones that bring in your milk, not the process of labour...but I'm not an expert

hi Dragonhart, I had an elective c.section due to
my dd being breech.

We had difficulties feeding in the begining, but we persevered & she's now 2.5 yrs & we are still b.feeding very happily

I knew I wanted to b.feed my dd & come Hell or high water I also knew that (eventually) she'd get the hang of it. It might be abit of a struggle to begin with, but my word it's worth all the effort in the long run.

Good Luck Sweetie, get intouch with your local b.feeding support group, I found them invaluable.
