baby clothes to take into theatre?

Do you still have to take baby clothes into theatre if you're requesting skin to skin straight after a ELCS?

Do they insist on a hat too?

Or would a nappy and a blanket suffice? X

With all 3 of my CS they just wrapped up baby in towels and blankets in theatre. My DH/family changed them once we were in recovery afterwards. For skin to skin they unwrapped them, placed them on my chest, then covered with blankets to keep warm. A hat might be good if your DP is going to cuddle them for a while after skin to skin, but not essential.

I had my baby in theatre and I have no idea what happened! Good question OP! I definitely didn't take in clothes for him. I assume they put him in a nappy and blanket. One of the nurses possibly got him dressed when I was in the recovery ward, she got me dressed too!

Mine got dressed in recovery and they had a hat to put on her.

DD didn't wear any clothes until one of the midwives dressed her about 10pm! In theatre she was just in hospital blankets and hat, we didn't take anything in at all.

I didn't take clothes into theatre for my planned CS either. Don't see how it would make sense to ever expect clothes to be present, as for sure no one having an emergency CS will have any. So there must always be alternatives. I did skin to skin afterwards, can't remember what baby was wrapped in but it was all fine.

We were told to take a nappy and a hat. They put nappy on and wrapped him up in a towel / blanket that was theirs. Mine was sort of an elective.

I had emcs and have no idea what went on. The midwife was shouting "get a hat" repeatedly when being rushed into theatre. Funny how that memory sticks! So bring a hat at least

Mine was dressed (in a babygro) by dh after he took her to be weighed.

I never used hats. The theory when I had mine was babies heat regulate through their heads so hats prevent heat exchange when they get too hot. Plus postnatal wards are the fiery pits of hell, so they boiled in a vest...

I had my third child by elcs, and didn't take her clothes into theatre. They wrapped her in a towel when she was born and put a knitted hat on her (made by volunteers) that we then brought home with us. The midwife didn't ask for her clothes until we were just about to go down to the ward (from recovery) and even then said she could continue to have skin to skin on the way down if I wanted :)

Had ELCS 3 days ago and only took a hat to theatre, didn't fit him anyway he is a big boy!

noitsachicken · 08/03/2015 05:17

We were told nappy and hat for ELCS.
Got properly dressed in recovery.

Apparently advice is now hats are only needed for very prem babies who may not be able to regulate body temp, or be in an incubator without body contact. Not for healthy, full term babies, who are more likely to have issues from overheating indoors, especially in hot hospitals.

Skin to skin is advised these days to help a newborn regulate temp. Hats are a throwback to the days when babies were immediately taken to nurseries and left alone.

apparently it's one of those last traditions that people can't let go!

Hat and nappy. 7 months ago. 2 weeks late.

Millie2013 · 09/03/2015 19:34

I didn't take anything into theatre, as it was all v rushed, but they wrapped dd in a towel and put a hat on her. Then my bp dropped, so OH and DD went back to the delivery room and he popped a nappy on and did skin to skin, as I was too poorly. It was lovely for him

Thanks everyone that's very helpful x

I took a nappy and hat. He was born at 9.45am and I didn't dress him until 6.30pm, we had loads of skin to skin all day.
