Leaking cs wound

NinjaPanda34 · 15/02/2015 21:59

Ick. Had for our twins on 29th Jan and had a few issues with my wound - leaking bloody/watery fluid, resulting in a week on anti-biotics. Thought it had healed and settled down, but it has leaked again tonight and is a bit smelly. I've put another dressing on it and cleaned it with savlon solution. Do you think I should phone my doc tomorrow as the midwife care has stopped now? What would you do?

Yes I would get it checked.
Did the antibiotics clear it up originally?
You may need a longer course to get on top of it though.

DishwasherDogs · 15/02/2015 22:02

Sorry, congratulations on the birth of twins! Thanks

bonzo77 · 15/02/2015 22:03

Emergency GP appointment tomorrow. Or ooh gp now, if open. In my area maternity triage would see you tonight too. I really wouldn't put anything on it, certainly not savlon solution. If it's leaking a lot I suppose a dressing is required, but I'd sooner leave it open to air. Congrats on your babies!

CurlyWurlyCake · 15/02/2015 22:05

Needs checking out Asap and I would be inclined to keep it uncovered.

Congratulations on your twins though Flowers

NinjaPanda34 · 15/02/2015 22:06

Thanks, that's what I thought, but it's tough because I can't drive yet and my dh goes back to work tomorrow after his 2 weeks pat leave sobs
Do you think I should call midwife again or try to get the doc to do a home visit?

Oh dear. I would leave it alone and exposed to the air if you can. Get seen first thing tomorrow or tonight if you are in pain or feel ill. Mine leaked serous fluid for a while which was mainly clear and it wasn't infected so it could just be that but you need to be swabbed again and probably treated anyway as precaution. How big is the bit that is leaking?

Showy · 15/02/2015 22:07

I think your midwife would happily see you.

MissRabbitsSister · 15/02/2015 22:15

I had this, got an emergency app at gp, he took one look at it and prescribed me antibiotics. Was cleared up about a week later. Just dab it with hot water on a cotton pad, dab it dry with a clean towel and keep it as uncovered as poss.

CurlyWurlyCake · 15/02/2015 22:16

Try the midwife first.

I struggled to get a dr to visit for my post c section scar Hmm

Teanbiscuitsallround · 15/02/2015 22:23

Congratulations :)

I had this too and went straight to Triage back on labour ward ( was on the weekend so rang hospital and was told to come straight in ).

Antibiotics were prescribed and also as pp said, keep it uncovered if you can ( easier said then done )

Hope it heals soon and you feel better

Errrr2012 · 15/02/2015 22:26

Speak to the maternity unit/delivery suite at the hospital, you're under their care up to 28 days after babies delivery.

turdfairynomore · 15/02/2015 22:40

Have had this three times-2 sections and a hernia repair. I must just be either prone to infection or alive with bacteria!!! It really needs antibiotics I'd imagine, as with new babies you don't want to be crashing down in flames with temperature etc.In the meantime I'd try bathing with salty water, drying carefully with hairdryer or something clean and non fluffy and keeping it open to the air if possible. Good luck in trying to see a gp! With my hernia op infection that was the trickiest bit! I phoned for appt slightly after the "magic time;-as I hadn't noticed the ooze/smell at that stage. As I hadn't phoned at the correct time and as it wasn't deemed (by the receptionist) to be an emergency, I was offered an appt for 10 days later. I politely declined and had my dad take me to minor injuries! They wrote a STINKING letter to gp saying that I should have been seen in surgery as a matter of urgency. Apparently that "complaint"-even though I didn't make it-now makes my name "light up" if I have drs appt/phone surgery etc. It means something like "be careful with this one, she might sue"!! The power!! Hope that you get sorted soon op!

I needed antibiotics for mine, but a small amount of manuka honey on a dressing also really helped. Get seen ASAP, and congratulations Thanks

Millie3030 · 15/02/2015 23:03

Mine leaked so I sat outside in the sunshine (not possible in February) with my scar exposed, but I would let the air get to it, it helped mine heal together. Does it look red or inflamed? As that can let you know if it's infected. If it's smelling though that doesn't sound good. Have a look tomorrow and if it feels really tender, or is still smelling I would phone the midwife or health visitor and get them to come out and have a look.

123Jump · 16/02/2015 22:12

You definitely need to have the wound seen. Your treatment room nurse is probably best as they deal with wounds all the time.
If it is oozing either wear big knickers with a pad over the wound, but it's ok to put a clean plaster style dressing on too.
Showering is fine, allow the water to wash over the wound-no washing it with soap though.
Pat dry.
Hair dryers are not actually recommended to use to dry wounds as they harbour all sorts of dust and crap (when was the last time any of us ever cleaned the hairdryer?!).
Sometimes wounds can 'break down', then they need to be healed from the inside out, which takes quite a long time and daily dressings, so it is really worth avoiding this, so get a GP/t room nurse app as soon as you can.

CultureSucksDownWords · 16/02/2015 22:28

I had loads of leaking serous fluid from two "holes" in my c section wound. I think it was the healing from the inside out that someone else mentioned that caused it.

I had daily trips to the nurses at my GPs to change the dressing and check it. I sympathise as it was really quite grim. I had to have a variety of specialised dressing as it was producing so much fluid. I was also on antibiotics too.

NinjaPanda34 · 19/02/2015 22:01

So the boys are 3 weeks old today and my wound is still leaking fluid. Am on my second dose of anti-biotics. Anyone else had their wound leak for so long? Am going to phone the docs again tomorrow. Sigh.

CultureSucksDownWords · 20/02/2015 08:54

Ah sympathies. Mine was like this and it was really annoying. It did suddenly turn the corner and

CultureSucksDownWords · 20/02/2015 08:55

... oops... and sort itself out quite quickly. I hope it does the same for you.

espa · 20/02/2015 09:48

Hi ninja. Mine stopped properly leaking about 2 weeks after but still wad swollen and tender for almost 4 weeks. I was on a 16 day course of antibiotics which I only started on day 6 so I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you are being looked after by gp etc.

NinjaPanda34 · 21/02/2015 21:31

So the swab the doc took on Tues came back and I'm on another set of anti-biotics aswellas the other set. Hopefully it'll settle soon, but already the smell (nice) has gone and it hasn't leaked today. Fingers crossed this is progress?

OP posts:
MrsTedCrilly · 25/02/2015 23:36

I had this, the wound came open in parts.. The fluid was quite watery and yellow at first, then was a thick yellow but no smell.. I just cleaned and dried it daily and it had closed fully by 5 months Smile

MrsTedCrilly · 25/02/2015 23:38

But that was without antibiotics or visiting drs.. I was told it would heal quicker without being interfered with. I think mine took so long as it was hidden under an overhang Blush
