Vbac after breech

My friend is about 5 months pregnant and is seeing a consultant as her last baby a few years ago was undiagnosed breech and she ended up with an emergency cs under general after baby became distressed.
She really wants a vbac in water and would love to go to the midwife centre attached to our local hospital. However she is not sure she will be allowed after the last birth.
From what she's told me it's either in water (at the mw unit as more pools and a good atmosphere) or she'll take the cs they've offered.
Anyone know if she has a right to request the vbac in the attached mw unit? She's worried that they will make her labour in the hospital after the last time, but the reason for the cs started because they didn't know her daughter was breech. Plus the mw unit is attached to the hospital so if something happened it won't take long to transfer.

I had my son at the mw unit (although not in water) and the experience was lovely so I'd love her to have the opportunity to go where she wants to.

At my hospital, there was no way anybody was allowed in the MLU for Vbac, whatever the reason for the first c-section.

The issue they had was the increase of scar-rupture and a need to be more monitored, so water births were not possible.

This may vary in a different hospital.

Sorry...posted before meant to ! I gave birth in the consultant led unit, and also found the experience really good. Prior to giving birth, I felt a bit cheated that I couldn't have the option of the MLU..but in all honesty it didn't matter. I had a lovely, peaceful experience and the added security that there was help on hand if there were any problems.

If there is a pool in the consultant led unit, she may be able to have a water birth - at my hospital there wasn't so it wasn't a possibility.

Good luck to your friend Smile .

Thanks. She said they didn't really mention the scar tissue issues to her, just about the whole having had a cs last time.
She spoke to her midwife today who is going to check if they are able to monitor her properly in water and if they can she could try a water birth at the hospital which she says might be enough of a compromise if it's safest.

Hopefully the hospital will allow her to have a water birth - it sounds promising that the midwife is considering it Smile .

I think it varies from hospital to hospital, and also on individual circumstances. When i was considering Vbac, the advice on here really varied. Some people were told "No", others were not encouraged to have a caesarian. Even personally, my initial consultant was really positive, but I then had another consultant who kept saying it was a risk.

Good luck to your friend Thanks .

Hi op, I had a vbac after a breech baby, I was told that it had to be hospital and no water birth I'm afraid. Also had to be constant monitoring but not sure if that's a vbac thing or not. Pregnancies were not much different but there were lots of checks at appointments to make doubly ds2 was head down. I'm now pg with dc3, am no longer consultant led or high risk but no option of a water birth or suggestion of giving birth anywhere other than a hospital, not worth the risk IMO anyway.
