Placenta delivery

Ok, I havent heard anywhere much talk about this.

So how does it work in reality? How long after the baby is born placenta is to be delivered? How does it actually happen? Do you have to push it out just like a baby? Does it hurt?
If you have c-section do they take out placenta via the incision?

Thanks to all exoerienced moms.

I had a home birth and after DD had been cuddling and feeding for a while (maybe 10 minutes?) I had this "I should get rid of the placenta) moment - I stood up and pushed a bit it just plopped out. No pain. Then the midwives checked it was complete because retained pieces of placenta can get infected.

The baby rooting and suckling should start to trigger the uterus to contract, so if you want a natural third stage (ie no injection) then skin to skin contact and feeding the baby immediately after the birth help.

The placenta isn't the most surprising bit immediately after birth though. For me the most odd bit was feeling really dizzy because my lungs suddenly had a lot more room! And my stomach looked very odd. Still big but deflated.

I had the injection the first time round and it made me throw up, so with the other DC I had a natural third stage (with delayed cord clamping as well).

Didn't hurt, so far as I can remember - not like the first breastfeeding cramps, anyway. As a PP said, it's like a huge lump of liver. When I had my last DC, I particularly asked to have a good look as I reckoned I wouldn't be seeing one again for a while.

First time round I had the injection, took 2 hrs before it finally came out, they were about to take me to the theatre to have it manually removed.

Second time opted for physiological third stage and it took about 20mins. I figure maybe the injection didn't work that or I reacted wrong to it somehow.

I had a natural third stage with delayed cord clamping. Stayed in pool for a while after DS was born then placenta just kind of fell out a little while after i'd got out of the pool.
