If I had fell pregnant again, what would they suggest?

Only have one DS who's 5 months old.

When I was pregnant with him, I had the GTT and nothing was picked up. Measured fine each week at midwife appointment.

I was induced at 40+12.
Nothing happened.
No dilation.
No contractions.
I was so sore down there that I'm not sure I'd have ever gotten through labour if it ever started!
In the end I asked for a section and got one at 40+15.
He was undiagnosed breach
and was 11lb 7oz.
Everybody was shocked.

If I fell pregnant again, what do you think the hospital/midwives would suggest?
Would I have extra scans? Would they want me to be induced early incase it's a big baby again? Would they suggest a section again?

Personally after the way the last one went, it was awful I was updating a thread along the way, it was awful, you all saved me I think I'd rather go for a section, as it was positive and I recovered well. I can't even begin to imagine how much it would have ruined me if he'd have arrived vaginally at his size & position, and what kind of state he'd be in too. It would surely have led to a section even if I started labouring? Nobody told me to expect a big one. Nobody noticed he was breach. I feel we'd both be safer if I had a section.

What do you think?

btw I'm not pregnant, just wondering

Thank you Smile

So I clearly didn't check the title.. It is a mix of 'if I had another baby' and 'if I fell pregnant again' Blush

If your next one was born at 37-40 weeks they would likely be smaller than DS though. I'd leave the decision until then.

Growth scans, probably from 28/40 and then four weekly ish. Prob wouldn't induce but would book a section for x date depending on growth scan and let you labour if you went into labour prior to the booked date. Probably 41 weeks.

Alternatively you would have no problem booking a CS at 39/40 if that's what you wanted.

GTT again of course.

You would have regular gt blood tests every 4 weeks till/if you get it again.

You will be scanned routinely and induced early if baby too big no earlier than 38 weeks I think though

I had a big baby and they offered induction at 37 weeks, I refused as it seemed too early. I also refused induction after my due date, I requested a c-section and I had a section booked for 41+4 but ds came on his own the day before the section.

How did they diagnose gestational diabetes? Did they just say you had it because the baby was big?

Number3cometome · 27/01/2015 14:39

Criteria for GTT is previous babies born above the 92nd centile.

I was not previously diagnosed with GD, but I am having to have a GTT as my DD was born weighing 8lb 2oz at 38 weeks and DS was 9lb at exactly 40 weeks.

I didn't even think they were big and think it is ridiculous to be tested but alas they say 92nd centile is the criteria.

Doesn't seem to matter to them that their Dad is 6ft 3 and they are both tall kids now!

Every hospital will have a slightly different policy on this. (see all the different experiences above) I would suggest that you write to your consultant if/ when you are thinking of getting pregnant, or even now, and ask for information on probable management in your next pregnancy. They should have done this before you left the hospital really.
I don't think you would get much argument about a planned elective section. They will scan for baby size potentially, certainly in the last trimester. And obviously a GTT. But in truth you probably just made a big baby, as your gtt was clear. Not all big babies are due to diabetes.
