Loss ten days after birth, what is normal? (TMI warning)

I had a lovely ds2 ten days ago and am just looking for a bit of reassurance of what my loss should be like at this stage. The bleeding was tapering off to lighter and sometimes just brown end of period type stuff until yesterday.

This morning I woke up feeling like id come on a heavy period and when I went to the loo I had bright red blood again and passed a clot maybe twice - three times the size and thicker than 50p piece. Later on I also gushed a small amount of blood when going to the loo. I havent saturated a pad or anything like that though.

Just for info, I am breastfeeding which I know can make a difference. I have had a moderate activity level as I have felt really well after the birth. Due to lack of car I had to walk approx a mile yesterday and 1.5 miles the day before, pushing the double pram for part of the way but taking the walk slow. Ive also done things around the house - tidying, washing, getting some clothes down from the loft, seeing to my toddler etc and have been out to the shops a couple of times but not for long, just to get out/sort a few bits. However I have also done my fair share of sitting on the couch! My dp has been fab doing the majority with our toddler and cooking. I wouldn't consider that i'd done anything too strenuous but I havent been bed bound either!

So does this loss sound within the realms of normal? Hoping for some reassurance really until I see my mw tomorrow...

Don't worry stop start bleeding is normal. I had my son 6 weeks ago and like you found everytime I had an active day the bleeding intensified- by too much I mean just going to the shops or cooking dinner caused me to bleed more - my health visitor said its all to do with gravity etc. Ended up spotting the last 2 weeks but pretty much stopped now. You could always check with your health visitor before you see someone about it.

Take it as a hint to put your feet up even more with your new baby :)

Sounds like you've overdone it, but please do speak to your MW or HV. Slow down and take it easy!

Congratulations on your baby Thanks

Thank you both, feel a bit reassured now Thanks I am due to see the mw tomorrow so will let her know unless it gets any worse today.

I have been enjoying lots of cuddles with ds2 and lots of feeding but theres always a little part of you that wants to get back to feeling normal and of course stay on top of everything isn't there Smile

It sounds like you have done too much (definitely wrt pushing a double buggy and walking so far!). The bleeding is from the placenta coming away. It is enormous - say the size of an A5 sheet of paper and that is essentially an open wound. Just as it starts to heal, if you do too much, you dislodge the "healing" and you will get heavy bleeding again. It is your body telling you to slow down, put your feet up and take it easy!

There is no rush to back to normal - enjoy the cuddles and DP being happy to gel - neither lasts forever!!!!

Congratulations :)

Thanks chocolate that is actually a really interesting explanation, I had no idea that was what the bleeding was, I just presumed it was the womb lining coming away. Makes sense why you need to take it easy afterwards now.

Thanks Smile
