Should i avoid induction?

I am currently 5 days overdue and have been told I will be offered induction date after 8 days as dd was 10 days late and ended up in NICU with meconium aspiration. Since I am very worried about this happening again should I go for induction or is it really awful and should I hang on in there as long as possible instead?

Hello

I was induced with my first, and although I would rather not have to be induced again (and if these contractions carry on, induction is going to be the last thing happening!) if it was risking the baby at all to be in there for a bit longer, I would choose induction any day of the week

The worst part about my induced labour was the pethedine and gas and air - never again!

mamado · 15/10/2006 04:40

Oh how exciting contractions! What stage are you at? How often are they? good luck!

Every night for the last week I've thought , ah ha here we go, then I go to bed and nothing - very frustrating!

Same here, every night for a week or so, but I had a bit of a show on Friday and have spent nearly the whole time since with contractions ranging from almost nothing to being quite strong. It isn't quite as exciting as worrying though, I am only 34 weeks.

I would have thought with you being 5 days over, and contractions every night, that if you don't go naturally before the 8 days is up, it won't take very much of an induction to get you going. That is exciting

mamado · 15/10/2006 11:22

Oh I do hope so! Good luck to you to, it must be worrying having contractions at 34 weeks but at least we couldn't be at a better time for premature babies to be ok. Hope we don't end up chatting again at 4am!!! Thinking of you x

Hello, still here hanging on, how about you? Is there a Baby Mamado yet?

Lio · 16/10/2006 09:32

how are you doing mamado? I was induced first time and did a LOT of homework to enable me to fight for my right NOT to be second time. Will keep an eye on this thread to see if you need further info.

mamado · 16/10/2006 11:07

Still here - glad you are still hanging in there NatalieJane. Are you still getting regular contractions? Mine are coming in the evening/night, not really painful and then gone the next morning which is VERY frustrating

Was induction that awful Lio? Should I be more worried about a repeat with an overdue baby like last time or being induced? Would like your honest opinion! Also would rather be in hospital for as short a time as possible- I was in for one week last time and don't really want to repeat that especially since I never been away from dd for even one night.

Hurry up baby! Membrane sweep on wed and then being booked in for induction, so not much time to play with!

Yep, the contractions are still coming in the evening, keeping me awake all night, then toning down to a rumbling period type pain in the morning, dissapear altogether in the afternoon, and then come back full on in the evening. I am absolutely exhausted, and if this carries on until my due date (25th November) or even later I'm really not going to be in any fit shape to give birth, I have had about 10 hours sleep since Thursday! I have made an appointment to see the midwife tomorrow, so hopefully she will be able to give me some answers, or do something - anything - to help!

Have you tried all of the so called DIY things to get yourself going? Hot curry, pineapple, sex(!!), etc? Try not to worry too much about being induced, you could have a fantastic labour if you are induced, and a rubbish one if you're not, it doesn't always follow suit! Either way, you must be getting pretty excited, this time next week it will all be over!!

There are lots of induction stories on here, some better than others. I have a friend who wanted an induction second time, because for her the whole thing was a really good experience, so if it does happen for you please don't go into it scared.

However, from memory, women who are induced are more likely to have more intervention (from epidural and venourse to C-secion), and I do not like hospitals and didn't want a medicalised birth (opted for a home birth second time). If you feel up to arguing with your hosp/midwife, tell them that you do not want to be induced unless they can demonstrate that it is in your baby's interests (or yours, of course). For example, I was 12 days overdue when dd was born, but due dates are an inexact science (up to two weeks either way if it relies on the '12 week' scan, which mine did) and when the midwives saw the placenta they said there was still plenty of life left in it. I had three sweeps before going into labour and although I was booked in to have a scan (to check the placenta was functioning) and monitoring (to check baby OK) I was armed with all the info from Pat THomas's book 'Your birth rights' in case I needed to argue my case. I got the book from the library so unfortunately I can't help you with the facts, figures and law, but basically, let them absolutely convince you that induction is for your/baby's benefit and not just because that's what their guidelines say should happen.

Is no news good news Mamado?

NatalieJane · 17/10/2006 22:00

Ooooh this is exciting, I can't wait for the birth announcement!!

mamado · 19/10/2006 14:51

Thanks for all your help ladies. Managed to avoid induction in the end and dd2, Jaya, was born at 6.55 am on tuesday the 17th weighing 3lbs 13. It was straight-forward and quick [all happened between 12.30am and 6.55 am!] although very painful as they anaged to con me out of the epidural i wanted! However, we were home 6 hours later and all getting on well.

How are you NatalieJane? Has it all calmed down? I hope the midwife has been of some help

Lio · 19/10/2006 14:52

congrats mamado! was dd2 really that light?

mamado · 19/10/2006 15:24

oops! I meant 8lbs 13, this lack of sleep is certainly getting to me!

Awww, I guessed you must have gone into labour!! Congratulations!! And what a beautiful name! You will have to put pictures up very quickly How are you feeling, apart from the tiredness?

I am still getting contractions, the midwife sent me to the consultant the next day (which was yesterday) she doesn't think it is labour (no shit sherlock, I think I'd have had the baby by now if it was!!) she thinks it is an irritable uterus, told me to rest up as much as I can, and to go to the hospital if they become as regular as 5mins apart, they haven't gotten that regular again but have gotten stronger and stayed for longer, but it is basically going to carry on like this till he is born, which could be tomorrow or the middle of December!

mamado · 19/10/2006 15:48

Oh I really feel for you NatalieJane, the last thing you need is to be completely knackered at this stage in your pregnancy. I really hope it calms down for you and you get some proper rest.

I am feeling surprisingly good at the moment, may feel different after another night of no sleep! Why are babies so nocturnal? At least I get to play with dd during the day while dd2 sleeps like an angel!

If you get a chance keep me updated on how you are doing...

You might find you carry on feeling better than you thought, I think we tend to find a second wave of energy from somewhere to get us through the first few weeks!

I got about 4-5 hours last night which is the most I have had since Friday, if I can keep at about that much I will be OK I think, if it goes back to nothing at all or only an hour or so, I will be useless by the time labour comes!

mamado · 24/10/2006 10:08

Hi NatalieJane, how are you getting on? I hope you are getting some more sleep and not up most of the night every night with pains.

Dd2 is being an angel baby so far, although there is plently of time for that to change!
