I had a PPH with my first son and found it difficult to get over physically and emotionally. When I found I was pregnant again-even tho planned,I was terrified. I read somewhere it helps to get a medical person to go through your birth notes with you. This especially appealed to me as I was so drugged up by the end of my first labour I didn't really know what happened or why. It helped a lot to understand what happened. In my case it was just the result of a long labour. Muscles are too tired to contract down quickly to cut off the blood supply to the placenta site. Therefore would not necessarily happen again. My next birth was completely different and no problems. I still worried all the way through my second pregnancy and now wish I had been more positive .What alovely considerate friend you are.

my mum had a pph with me but not my brother subsequently. i had one with my second child (though it wasn't terribly serious, i didn't need to go to theatre or have a transfusion, just lots of fluid through a drip & i was anaemic for a bit. oh, & my milk didn't come in for 5 days, definitely the worst bit). no number 3 for us, but nothing to do with the pph. hth.

oh, & my 2nd birth was much more straightforward than my 1st which was failed ventouse/forceps. go figure.

Has she been through her notes with a midwife as a debiefing? Most hospitals have a 'Birth Afterthoughts' service where she can do this. Sheila Kitzinger also runs a birth crisis network and there are phone numbers of people on the website who she can phone to talk things through.

HTH

Hiya Pruni,
I had one with my ds (which I never found out about until I was pregnant with my 2nd), and was so scared of it happening again.
It didn't!!

Quadrofiendia · 15/10/2006 17:17

Hi Pruni, I had a pph after giving birth to twins, I had a blood transfusion and to be honest didn't even think about it when prergnant with ds. However I did have a pph with ds too, however he was 10 lbs 14 ozs and had shoulder dystocia. I think there is a higher chance, and you are probably monitored more closely. When pregnant with my ds4 In was petrified about having another PPh or another shoulder dystocia, I armed myself with as much knowledge as i could which did make me feel better. I also talked alot about my traumatuic deliveries which was a great help. Anyway after two pph's my fourth child was born with no intervention and no pph.

( I think epidurals, induction and assisted deliveries all heighten the chances of pph)

PPH is a mner........

jellybeans · 07/11/2006 12:28

Hi i also am worried about PPH. I had this with my last birth and lost 3500 ml. It was about an hour after my section, a vessel ruptured. Now i am pg I am terrified of it happening again.

hannahsaunt · 07/11/2006 12:42

I had large-ish PPH after ds1 (2000ml) and ended up being transfused 2 units. Absolutely nothing second time round. HTH

jellybeans · 12/11/2006 11:05

Hannahsaunt; that makes me feel abit more hopeful

Blossomhill · 12/11/2006 11:33

I had a pph with both ds and dd

Ds I lost a litre and with dd just over half a litre.

lulumama · 12/11/2006 11:38

Pruni......reassurance and just listening is good..

suggest she goes through her birth notes with someone.....

agree with everything beaks said...that's good advice....

if she is still terrified...has she had any counselling...she might have PTSD..which can occur after a terrifying birth experience, especially if she lost a lot of blood and maybe feared the worst

there is a birth trauma association she could talk to...i'll try and find the link and sheila kitzinger has also set up a birth crisis helpline....will also try and find the link for that....

NAB3- post partum hemorrhage...unexpected blood loss after birth, think more than 500 ml is classed as PPH. Some blood loss is normal with every delivery..but large & unexpected loss is not.

you are a kind and considerate friend ....

Overrun · 12/11/2006 11:39

How do you all know hom many ml or litres you lost, my god I can't remember much at all They think mine was caused by twins and as I might have twins again, its another reason not to try for another baby. But sure, that for the most part you are fine, not least because medical team will prepare for it. I think thats what I would concentrate on if I was your friend.

birth trauma association

pupuce · 12/11/2006 12:00

Overrun - it's the midwives or doc who estimate it... it can be overestimated as it can quickly look like a lot. That is a common problem... it's a bit of a guestimate !
To "qualify" it has to be over 500ml...
It's not becasue you had a PPH that you will have one again and also not all PPH require action either.

jellybeans · 12/11/2006 14:14

Overrun, my PPH was also after having twins, and this time I am only pg with one. I knew how much I lost as I read my notes and it was on my discharge records. I think I lost 500ml at twin ones birth, 1 litre during twin 2's c/section, then I had 1 litre in the drain and 1 litre in the abdomen when opened.

Overrun · 12/11/2006 14:58

They were carrying mine away in sheets, they said something about losing over half my bodys blood or something, but never saw anything notes. It was pretty serious, as had to be taken back into surgery, but they managed to avoid a hysterectomy.
Any way good luck to every one. I'm sure if I decided to have another one, the thought of pph wouldn't put me off iyswim
