How poorly would a baby be born at 34 weeks?

I do have reasons for asking this, but is it really too early, or is it just preferable to go a bit further?

No, I don't really want DS with me if I am screaming like a banshee like last time he would be scared out of his wits! But if he isn't at school when it kicks off, or asleep, then we can ask our neighbours to have him at their house, DH can pop round and let him know whats going on so DS won't be scared or whatever, I won't be worried knowing that DH is there for DS if he is needed. Although they have offered, I can't leave DS with the neighbours and go off to the hospital, he wouldn't like it, which means I wouldn't relax, it would just be a nightmare.

The more I think about the home birth option, the more it sounds perfect (apart from the pain aspect!! But let's face it, it is going to hurt no matter where I have him!) DS was born quite quickly for a first timer, and there were no problems or anything.

And the thought of being able to shut the door after the midwife leaves, have a proper cup of tea at home, in my own bed, with our new baby and his older brother, is so tempting compared to the hospital!

As I say I don't know anything about home birthing had both mine via the sun roof.
Can you have gas and air for a home birth ?
Have you contacted your midwife to talk it over ?

NatalieJane · 19/10/2006 11:11

Yes, you can have gas and air, but I had it last time along with pethadine and I absolutely hated the experience, woudln't touch it with a barge pole this time!

I haven't spoken to the midwife yet, it only became an option for us last night, and we haven't 100% decided it is the way for us to go yet, although it is becoming more and more appealing the more I think about it!

There are a few girls on the November ante-natel thread that have had or are planning a home birth, so I am squeezing info out of them!!

If nothing does come of it though, at least it is taking my mind off of the bloody contractions!

have you looked here - www.homebirth.org.uk/ ?

NatalieJane · 19/10/2006 11:19

Thanks Throckenholt, one of the girls on the AN thread has posted that link for me, I am going to have a good read of it all this afternoon and then will be able to give DH all the info he will want! He is a little more sceptical of it than me, but realises that I will be the one in labour. But I will feel better if he is supporting me rather than just going along with me!

This very exciting. I would have homebirth if I were to have any more but I am not having any more ....so that will be that idea then..... You will be fine. I wish I had just stayed at home with last one. All I ended up doing was going to hospital to have him then came back home again. Good idea. How are your contraction doing now. have they gone yet?

NatalieJane · 19/10/2006 13:37

I am really coming round to the idea, still very nervous of the pain aspect, but like I said I have been through it once and lived to tell the tale, and I have volenteered for it again by going on to have another so it can't be the end of the world!

Contractions are just the same, they are perhaps not quite as intense, or I'm just not concentrating on them so much with reading about the home births, but no more regular which is what the midwife and the consultant have seemed more worried about. I am quite happy if I can carry on getting at least as much sleep as last night, (probably 4-5 hours in all). I really don't think this is labour, I still don't have that feeling, and I think if it was going to, it would have happened by now, it is a week tomorrow since I got my show and the contractions really picked up, it seems an awful long time even for a slow start to any labour!

Hi NJ, haven't logged on for a while so just caught up with you! So pleased that everything is looking alright and it's v. exciting for you that you're looking into a home birth. A friend had a home birth and loved it, said it was 100 times better than her previous hospital birth. Keep resting and looking after yourself.

Do you think the contractions are worse at night as you're busy during the day and not so aware? When I was in early labour with dd, a hot water bottle pressed to my back really helped. Might be worth a try.

NatalieJane · 19/10/2006 14:00

Hello

I haven't been doing anything in the day really, DH has been coming home and doing everything he can so I have little to do the next day, bless him. But there is, or was until today, a very big difference in the few and far between contractions I had during the day and the stronger more often ones I have at night, it has only been today that they have carried on through the night and into the day.

The hot water bottle is good for when I can feel the odd one in my back and just for a general soothing feeling, but it doesn't do any good with the front pain.
