I just had the radio on but if I had made a CD it would have contained a mix of the following;

Aerosmith
Greenday
No Doubt
Pink
Kasabian
Kaiser Chiefs
Old Motown stuff
Cheesy 80's faves like Karma Chameleon
Guns N Roses
Some 'chillout' stuff like Corrine Bailey Rae or Jack Johnson

loads of stuff!

Ds came out to 'You Raise Me Up' by Westlife as it was playing on the radio - I now have mixed feelings for that song as it brings back both painful and overwhelming feelings. Just a thought if you are thinking of playing your favourite songs.

DiamondsAreForever · 06/10/2006 21:31

Hi- I agree with the favourite songs- I really liked that 'fix you' song by Coldplay last summer and had it on my mix cd whilst in labour with dd (two gruesome days!). Now I can't listen to it at all!

great suggestions so far!

I made my own music. It went like this
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
calm calm calm calm calm calm calm calm calm AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.
Iy was pretty monotone, but it worked for me!!!

maggiesmama · 06/10/2006 22:17

snugglebumnappies · 07/10/2006 11:44

Strangley enough when I was in theatre for my emergency cs Duran Duran came on the radio and I had started off the night at home in labour watching my best of Duran Duran DVD, sad old '80's throwback that I am!

BATtymumma · 07/10/2006 11:45

katiebirdie · 07/10/2006 22:30

same as you lucy I couldnt bear to have music on while I was in labour (asked the midwife to turn the tinny radio off just before started pushing) Think it was based on the fact my do was singing along to the songs that came on instead of coaching me. lol

Gem13 · 07/10/2006 22:35

Had such a grim time that I told DH not to get the CDs out! I knew then that I didn't want to have any horrid memories attached to the music.

But... the only one I can remember packing (I bought it specifically for labour) was Simon and Garfunkel.

thankyoupoppet · 07/10/2006 22:44

the drugs don't work -(the verve?) !!

Had a really lovely album last time- pure chillout or something like that - very chilled, slow, subtle and soothing.

good luck, how wonderfully exciting - birth preparation!

Imascaryfairy · 09/10/2006 21:45

I put together a CD for my labour with DS1 - all my motivational songs. When the time came though (and I was in the hospital for 20 hours before he was born) I found i had no interest in listening to it, and instead had the radio on in the background as a mixture of whitenoise and a timechecker!!!

spinamum · 09/10/2006 22:07

I bought some cassettes(remember them anyone?) for labour with DS.(delivery suite hadn't joined us with CD players yet) I bought lots of "classic" stuff like the Beatles and DS1 popped out to "Waterloo Sunrise" on a sixties comp I'd found. I (randomly) didn't want to labour to stuff that was in the charts at the time.In case DS arrived to something horrendous! I had the radio on for ages too though.

I think I'll have lots of stuff from "when Mummy met Daddy" era on my mp3 player this time( 90s Brit pop!)

Creena · 10/10/2006 11:51

I would second the Massive Attack and Kate Bush suggestion, as this is music that I would personally like and listen to and find soothing and calming. I'd probably also add Bjork, Air and Goldfrapps' Felt Mountain to the list because again, I personally enjoy listening to them.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it depends on what kind of music you enjoy and what you find relaxing and soothing. Unless of course you want music that evokes other states of mind, like the kind of energetic, go-getting music they use in montages!!!
