Braxton Hicks at 38 weeks

Has anyone had Braxton Hicks late on in pregnancy, having not had them previously?

I'm 38 weeks and there's definitely something happening, but trying not to get too excited! It stops and starts and is more uncomfortable than painful...

First pregnancy and haven't had BH before now, so not sure if that's what it is, or whether it's a slow start to labour?

Otherwise, have a bit of back pain and feeling nauseous, but nothing to write home about.

What do you reckon?

I had plenty on and off for about 10 days/two weeks before DS was born at 39+2. When I went into labour, I dismissed all of early labour as simply more Braxton Hicks, which is good as it just meant that I went about doing my normal things. I only recognised it as labour when I realised that they were getting more uncomfortable, longer and that they had fallen into a regular patter of every 10 or so mins over about two hours. I still went about doing what I'd planned until they got to about 5 mins apart and then I had to start focusing.

I'd say that it could just be BH and you could have them on and off for the next week or so. Or, it could well be the real thing... only time will tell! Keep us posted.

Soundsystem I know exactly what you mean. From what I've read its normal not to have BH early on in your first pregnancy, I'm 40+1 (also first pregnancy) and have only felt them this week. TBH wasn't really sure it was them at first. I got excited too but after 4th day of them coming and going now, I think it just means your body is gearing up for the big day...

I'm also getting sharp twinges of pain in my groin (head isn't engaged yet so hope this means he is on the way south?) and a lot of squirming from the baby...

Altogether I'm taking these as signs of pre-labour (everyone tells me you'll know when its the real thing because it'll stop you in your tracks and it doesn't sound like either of us are quite there yet!). Good luck!!!

Thanks :)

@boyontheway I know what you mean about the sharp twinges of pain, can't say I'm really enjoying those! I think you're probably right. Good luck to you, too

@bagofsnakes, thanks, sounds like it could be either but seems more likely BH at the moment. Carrying on as usual until it ramps up a bit seems to be the plan!

I'm 37+5 with DC2, have been getting Braxton Hicks for about a week. Didn't have them last pregnancy so every time I get one I keep thinking the action is starting! Got a really long painful one yesterday, reminding me of the pain that is about to come Confused

PlumFairy2014 · 29/10/2014 15:50

Me too. I didn't get them until 40+3 and got over excited... Still having them now at 41.
Hoping it's a sign bump is making a move!
