Hi All,

Congratulations to all of you whom have had your babies!

I was due on September 12th and worked right up until the end of Week 39! But but am now into Week 3 of my already quite short 7.5 Month Mat Leave, and no baby as yet!

Had an attempted sweep at 40 + 2 which wasn't successful and then another this time successful attempt (I.E MW managed to sweep but nothing has kicked off yet!) at 41 + 2, a week later, but I also saw in my notes it scored a Bishops Score of 3 which I know is quite low.

Had planned an all natural water birth at the local MLU as have had a wonderful pregnancy so far, but there is currently no sign of a spontaneous labour as yet, and my induction date is looming, one day before I reach 42 Weeks, in three days time!

I am of course hoping things progress naturally but was also informed by MW on first sweep attempt that I have a low pelvic arch. My mother was informed the same thing when she had me, and had a C Section because of this - but of course that was some time ago!

With no signs of labour I've resigned myself to being induced but wondered if the combination of a low Bishops Score and narrow pelvic arch means a C Section is a likely outcome and the induction may not be successful? I am also likely to want pain relief, as I understand induced labour to be more painful than naturally occurring labour, however I understand an epidural may not mean I'm in the best physical 'position' to deliver with a low pelvic arch, as having researched it, position appears to be key in baby moving into best position for delivery. He currently hasn't moved beyond 2/5ths engaged either and at my last examination yesterday the MW said he was lying quite posterior and that I should sit in a more encouraging position to bring him around and into my pelvis more, which I've been doing, but I think he has now been in that position for the last 3 weeks or so, and doesn't seem to want or perhaps be able to budge!

I'm not precious about what kind of birth I have, and wouldn't feel cheated if I had to have a C Section as at this stage I just want my baby out safely, and am hoping not to be put through an arduous prolonged labour if the chances of a C Section are higher due to combination of low pelvic arch, low bishops score and the fact I'm being induced with a likely epidural!

Does anyone have experience of this? It's certainly not a case of being 'too posh to push' I had always intended to do it as naturally as possible, just wary a few factors are working against me now and wondered if anyone and experienced a similar situation and at what point the medical team usually make a decision. Even my NCT teacher whom I expected to champion natural labour advised I get a further obstetric opinion before attempting labour.

I really have had truly excellent midwifery care and they have done everything possible to reassure me that it's much better to try labor first and to go in with a positive outlook, which I truly am, but I of course have googled likely scenarios with very mixed results, so I am interested to see what other peoples outcome was in this kind of scenario.

PS have tried every 'natural' remedy to get labour going! To the point where I can barely stand the sight of RLT and Pineapple!

Thanks xxx

I could have written the first part of your post, I'm 42 weeks today, and will be going in for section tomorrow. This is due to an anticipated large baby and risks for shoulder dystocia (estimated 11lbs baby). This decision happened on Thursday last week after a growth scan on Wednesday, (have grown massively in last two weeks). I had a failed sweep, unfavourable cervix, bishops score was 2. Two weekends ago I was booked to local MLU for waterbirth or induction on Saturday, so things can change very quickly.

I would suggest that you request to talk to consultant to get all options on the table - midwives suggested I go for VB, but this was not recommended by consultant. I went in ready to fight my corner but ELCS was suggested. I think you need to push for the consultant appointment if you want to discuss the possibility of alternatives, but do it quickly! Good luck!

Thank you very much! Good luck to you too! Your right time is running out but it seems I've advised strongly from all quarters that labor needs to be attempted first. Going to make sure it's raised though as soon as I arrive for induction and will ask to speak to a Consultant too just so all angles are considered!

Do let me know how you get on! Xx

I just want to stress that midwifery team were quite against any section and wanted me to go for VB. I just wanted all options to be on the table and really had to push for section to be considered as an option . I'm not sure if you have a preference but for me it was safety of baby and myself. Hope you get the right result for you.

I am so surprised they pushed for a VB with an 11lb baby!

My baby hasn't measured anyway near as big, but I have felt quite the same, all quarters not keen on considering alternatives until a VB has been attempted. I'm keen to stress this has never been a case of me shying away from one, was all for it! But just feel instinctively that this may not work now due to a number of factors, and am adamant that my baby is born as safely as possible, regardless of the procedure. I think myself and DH will have to be as clear as possible on arrival on Thursday. Do you think we should ask to see a Dr when we get there too?

Sending you lots of luck and good wishes! You get to meet your baby tomorrow Mama! How wonderful! X
