they can do amazing things nowadays, my cousins baby born at 26 weeks - long time in hospital, came out on oxygen - 18 months later she is walking , she is able to see, hear and speak, no obvious long term problems.....i wish a happy outcome for your friends too...

misdee · 25/09/2006 18:24

wish i could say it would be, the baby will be needing lots of help. your friend should be prepared for a long stay for the baby.

Thomcat · 25/09/2006 18:25

Ohhhh feel quite worried. I'm sire it'll all be fine. Just need to hear you lot ay it will be ok really. Quite scary though aye. How long might she be in hospital for. She lives in London but was in Grimsby at the time so she's away from home and stuff . Poor thing.

they tend to aim for due date in mostr cases. the baby could be doing fine. SGK is a veteran of babes born at 32-33weeks. one of hers needed hardly any intervention just needed to gain weight.

misdee · 25/09/2006 18:28

that other thread is making me very angry now. (sorry TC, but if you'd read that one, you;d know what i mean)

janenevie · 25/09/2006 18:43

some places like to keep prem babies in until they reach a certain weight!
some seem to DC if everythings fine and babe doesnt need any intervention!
Loads of people were shocked when I bought my DD home at 4lb 10 apparently for some places they dont DC until they're 5lb!!!!

janenevie · 25/09/2006 18:44

misdee what thread im intrigued{sp?}!!!

nogoes · 25/09/2006 18:45

My 10 yr old niece was born at 30 wks and weighed 3lb she had a few breathing problems at first but she was fine and no long term problems. She is now 4ft.11 and weighs 8 stone!

jofeb04 · 25/09/2006 18:47

Hiya TC
just want to say that my best mate delivered her baby at 27weeks, and he had to stay in until his due date. Her ds put weight on very slowly, had many setbacks, and even now (hes only 7months from due date) hes catching every cold.
BUT, he is healthy, not that far off those milestones, and is a wonderful boy.

jofeb04 · 25/09/2006 18:51

He also had to weight 4lb before the hospital would even consider to let her ds leave.

PeachyClairHasBadHair · 25/09/2006 18:52

My page boy was born at 30 weeks, he is fine and has no disability at all

There's also a boy in ds's class who does ahve some disabilty (CP) but was born at 28 weeks and is the most gorgeous scrummy little chap I ahve evver laid eyes on

Babe's chances are good TC

nogoes · 25/09/2006 18:54

I can't remember how long my neice was in hospital but she was born on 20th November and was definitely at home for Christmas and that was 10 years ago.

sorrell · 25/09/2006 19:00

According to the premature baby charity Bliss, more than 90% of premature babies who weigh 800 grams (a little less than two pounds) or more survive. That sounds like good news to me. Good luck to her.

Mercy · 25/09/2006 19:03

Mate's dd was born at 32 weeks (yes I know that extra 2 weeks means a lot) but she is fine now at 17 months. Had lots of check ups after she got home - about every 4 weeks if not a bit more often. She is very healthy.

DH's cousin was born at about 28 weeks - over 20 years ago Had about 2 years of careful monitoring but is now a strapping postgraduate

chipmonkey · 25/09/2006 19:56

Ds3 was born at 32 weeks, absolutely no problems except that he keeps turning my computer monitor off when I'm on MN, very annoying!
My friend's ds was born at 25 weeks, no problems either, one of the brightest boys I've ever met.
Her dd was born at 32 weeks, no problems at all either.

wrinklytum · 25/09/2006 20:03

Thomcat, dunno if this helps but I was born at 28 weeks weighing 2lb 4oz thirty four years ago,and was in an incubator for three months, oxygen dependent for a while and tube fed.I have been healthy and the brain is relatively intact (Well except for 2 pgs when I was a bit hormonal he he) and I have a degree ( FWIW!!) .Afraid my typing and punctuation ability is a bit dicky as many of my posts will testify but cest la vie!!Good luck to your friend and her new baby hope they are both doing ok.

twocatsonthebed · 25/09/2006 20:12

my goddaughter was born at 31 weeks at about the same weight - she's now 11 and has just won English prize for her first year in secondary school. But I do feel sorry for your friend being so far from home...

nutcracker · 25/09/2006 20:13

My friend gave birth at 30 weeks and the baby was less than 3lb and spent about 8 weeks in scbu, but she was absolutly fine and is now a happy healthy 8 year old.

Tiggerish · 25/09/2006 20:15

Me too wrinklytum - I was born in '67 at 28 weeks. All ok except for rather dodgy hearing (don't wear aids though). It was tough on my Mum for a while but she got through it.

Thomcat · 25/09/2006 20:41

Thanks everyone. Just read this thread out to my best mate who knows her really well.
She's up in hospital away from home but her 2 sisters are local, she was visiting them when she went into labour.
Nice to read that it's all gonna be ok and that we can expect her to be there for a while, info like that all helps so you stop imagining stuff.
Thanks all.

Oh yes, I should add, Thomcat, that a bit of advice I would give everyone is if you have time ( and sometimes with a baby in SCBU you don't!!) buy the cot and the buggy and the rest of the stuff you will need for babs because sometimes they get discharged sooner than you think! Particularly with MRSA the attitude can be if a baby is doing well then discharge them before they catch something. I got the shock of my life when the paed said to us "Well, are you ready to go home today?" I had been expecting ds3 to be kept in close to his due date and was amazed when they let him home 6 weeks before that. We had no cot, no buggy, no steriliser, nothing. We asked them to keep him one more night while we rushed out to the only open shop with a nursery department and bought everything. To this day I hate the buggy and wonder what I would have bought if we'd had the chance to shop around!

mum2monkeys · 26/09/2006 20:10

Hi TC,

My Ds was born at 30+5days, he was 1.4kg, he now weighs in at a whopping 4.4kg, 3mths old yesterday (or 1mth if you go from his due date). He's fab a real little fighter, it's amazing how much will to live these little guys have......

A great sight, chat forum, is 'born to soon' on the baby centre web site - lots of mums who've been thru the same things, great support - you're friend will be on a bit of a roller coaster for the next few weeks, but it does get better - my ds came home a month before his due date - just to reiterate(sp) the be prepared post.

Wishing your friend and her lo all the best of luck xxx
