Playlists/Music During Labour

So does music make any difference during labour? We've compiled a playlist for the labour but lots of people have suggested it's pointless...

I took my iPod but it was the last thing on my mind at the time n never left my bag. More useful on post natal ward

Plateofcrumbs · 18/09/2014 13:17

I made a playlist of relaxing tunes to my own taste but when we got to delivery suite they had Heart FM on and we never got round to changing it. I would never had planned to spend hours listening to cheesy pop but it was actually quite a good distraction between contractions!

My hospital told me to bring some (music I like not worthy whale music) as frankly, they said, it can take a bloody long time so you might be glad of it.

I really wanted absolute quiet (as far as possible) during contractions. Music would have driven me up the wall. I wouldn't spend too long on a playlist.

I enjoyed my music. I was using G&A in the birthing pool. Sometimes I tuned it out and at other times I was humming along to it. I'm sure I'd have been fine without it, but was happy it was there.

Haven't used it, but would recommend music on the postnal ward

Back in the day (8 years ago) we made 2 CDs - one was quite upbeat, the other more relaxing. They were a welcome distraction until the last year or so by which time I wanted quiet. I would plan some music in case you fancy it.

mabelbabel · 20/09/2014 09:07

HOUR! Not year! I wasn't in labour for that long!

Blondiemama · 21/09/2014 00:34

I had iPod in docking station while I was in the birthing pool and I loved it! It gave me something to focus on and I was so high on G & A that I was even singing along between contractions ! Id do it and take it to have the option OP x

I used natal hypnotherapy (cd I put onto my phone) which plays relaxing music behind the exercises. Using the relaxing birth music cd from the same set helps you recall the relaxation exercises and takes you into a relaxed state. Used this in the birthing pool. I was just floating around zoning out between contractions and marvelling at how pain free it was. Recommended.

Acorncat · 21/09/2014 20:43

I had music on my phone but it didn't even occur to me to listen to it. We watched Saturday kitchen instead Hmm

Heatherbell1978 · 01/10/2014 21:17

Made a big difference to me. I had a straightforward birth with 5 hours spent labouring in the water pool and I look back quite fondly on the time spent lapping up the gas and air listening to my chill out tunes while DH fed me jelly babies. I used visualisation techniques to help manage the pain and having the music in the background really helped with that:-)

tippytappywriter · 01/10/2014 21:20

Any noise really annoys me when I'm generally stressed so it was speak on pain of death when I was giving birth. The CD we made stayed in the bag!

Branleuse · 01/10/2014 21:20

radio 6

Branleuse · 01/10/2014 21:20

salt n pepa - Push it

applecatchers36 · 01/10/2014 21:21

Had a very long birth & very grateful for playlist & Girls series DVDs that distracted ( somewhat) me during the pain...

Branleuse · 01/10/2014 21:22

Ring of fire - Johnny Cash

DinoSnores · 02/10/2014 11:42

I have delivered a baby (as in catching it, not pushing it out!) to this:

That's why I have a playlist or silence, rather than just what happens to be on the local radio!

ohthegoats · 02/10/2014 12:55

I've got a playlist on my ipod called 'Bad Mood Improvers' - it's full of stuff that most people would hate, but just makes me smile. I figure that might be useful if I even think of music. I think much more useful as a 'tool' if you're in for induction with the normal slow build up, or in afterwards for any length of time.

qumquat · 03/10/2014 19:21

I was far too busy mooing to even think about music! The iPod never left the bag.
