sorry if this has been asked before
but me and dp want to try for another baby the only thing that scares me is the pain.
during labour with ds of wich i was induced 4 times i was convinced i was going to die due to the pain, some people have told me it was because i was induced has any one had both births and was their a difference with the 2 types of labour??
TIA

Had three labours. DS1 wasinduced early, average length labout, paonful as anything. DS2 not induced, week early, long labout virtually apin free, ds3 not induced, short labour , most painful of the lot.

personally in your shoes, would got for early epidural and then just go for it.

Doh, should have said that Pupuce put me in touch with a doula and she was GREAT (if you are near N London/Herts I will gladly recommend) and was a big factor in removing my fear.

Question for Kitty, or anyone else who knows - I was told when I was induced that I couldn't go in the birthing pool for pain relief or have a bath, and needed constant monitoring of baby's heartbeat.

I'm confused... as soon as birth was induced the processes was taken completely out of my hands and handed over to the medical team, I had no control over what was hapenning (ie. waters were broken artificially when I got to 3 cm because it's 'procedure', I contested that and they were very persistant. Ended up being 4 hours at 3 cm so they broke my waters 'to accelerate' things, but it didn't accelerate anything at all!).

anyway, please let me know if in some hospitals you can get in the pool if you've been induced.

Cheers

Blueberry

Sorry I don't know the asnwer, but here's a sympathetic bump. My experience of induction was also loss of control and when I went over second time I read loads about my rights and was ready to fight tooth and nail not to go through that again.

IME it's when they add the pitocin (I think it's called synoctin in the UK) that really cranks up the pain. If they did an induction by sweeping membranes and then you went into labor naturally it shouldn't be as bad as with the drip.

Have not read whole thread, but in my opinion (ive had 2 induced labours) i think induced is hell on earth. My body wasnt ready and my baby wasnt ready. Like biting into an unripe apple, or picking a scab that isnt ready. im due in 4 days and having a homebirth, they can sod off if they think they are coming anywhere near me with a pessary or drip again.

having said that I will probably have 1 contraction naturally and be screaming for an epidural!

earthtomummy · 26/09/2006 17:27

I was induced with my 1st, but not my other 2. My experience was that induction is much more painful, so don't let that put you off another. Going into labour naturally is a gradual build up and still not as gut wrenchingly bad as being induced! Also, with your 2nd, I think you have more confidence to be able to say no to induction - unless of course it's for med. reasons - I was induced with my 1st because of high bp.

first 2 babies were induced by the pessary, as waters broke early - 36 weeks. both extremelly hellish. very quick dialation, back to back contractions. no time for an epidural. 2nd birth had complications too- cord round neck.
Both labours terrified me, so fast and furious.
3rd baby 39 weeks, contractions started on own. I got to 6 cm more managably, with seemingly ( just a bit) less pain, but then just as fast and furious, and again no time for an epidural.

I was induced with my 1st (waters broken) when I was 18 days overdue and nothing happened for several hours. During that time I wandered about, had a bath, watched TV and ate sandwiches. After being hooked up to oxytocin drip, it then took 4 hours. I can honestly say there was no pain as such, just a bit of discomfort and grunting. I had no pain relief at all.

In fact after, I sat shaking because I couldn't believe I'd actually given birth without anything I'd describe as pain.

I went into labour naturally with my 2nd and it took 21 excrutiating hours. TENS had no effect, nor gas & air, pethidine made no difference and only an epidural finally gave me some relief. I can't describe the pain except to say that as a grown woman I was begging anyone within earshot to "make it stop" .... when I wasn't screaming that was. I didn't know the noises I made that day were within me - they sounded inhuman and the whole experience felt very frightening as I felt like I had no control.

I kept thinking how "unfair" it was as 2nd births are traditionally thought to be quicker.

So ...... in my own experience, the induction was far far more positive, and not painful at all.
