Hiya,

Does anyone have any experience of Stirling Royal ? I am due to be there in Feb but so far I have no idea what it's like, what they will or won't let me do (pools, music, food, partners etc) or how long they are liable to keep me. I know it's still a ways off but I'm starting to look into these things now so I can make good choice about them. Any info would be great.

Hi Suis, I had ds in SRI in June 2005, overall a positive experience but it is best to be prepared. To answer your initial queries -

Pools - none, but midwives are great in terms of baths/showers if you want them

Music - each delivery room has a boogy box type cd player so radio/cd ok but no tvs in delivery rooms.

Food - loads of juice, lucozade, water during; tea and toast after delivery. Food on ward is a bit hit and miss, I took bits and pieces in to snack on for a couple of days postnatal. Sweets, crisps, fruit, juice and any little luxuries you may fancy. Tea, coffee and hot choc freely available on ward but you have to help yourself.

Partners - visiting on ward for partners is 2-8pm, different for others. If you end up being induced your partner can stay with you throughout i.e from 8am admission. If baby is born between 9pm and 10am your partner may not be able to accompany you and baby to the ward.

Accommodation - one large ward covering ante and post natal. ward split into about 12 4 bedded bays each with own toilet and shower room, private/single rooms available but are kept for emergency use. Basically can be requested on admission but not guaranteed, if you are lucky you get one and are charged about £40 per night but you may be asked to move to a bay if room is needed for emergency. Each bay/room has radio and tv but can be a bit hit and miss as to whether they work (the tv in my bay didn't so the girls and I ended up gossiping for Scotland)

Length of stay - dependent on how delivery goes you can technically go home after 6 or 8 hours. I stayed in for a couple of days with both dd and ds just to get feeding established and a bit of support.

What's provided - basically everything for baby (babygros/gowns, bedding, nappies, cotton wool, formula if required etc)maternity pads for you. I took in toiletries for me, PJs/comfy clothes, going home outfit for me and baby, entertainment/magazines etc

Support - staff are overall great, but you can feel a bit deserted at changeover/handover times. Baby is 100% your responsibility so you need to work out how you want to cover showers etc. First time round I showered when dh came in at 2pm, second time I got friendly with the girls in the bay and we took in turns to watch the babies whilst showers were taken, coffee runs done etc.

Let me know if I can give you any more hints.
