How is this done?

Have you had it done?

Do you mean for stemcells or for bloodtests after Birth?

3andnomore · 17/09/2006 09:35

Stemcell info
another site with Info about Stemcell collection

Just assuming now that you probably meant Stemcell collection!

jabberwocky · 17/09/2006 10:08

We had it done with ds and already have our kit for this one. It's a really straightforward procedure although there are two main collection methods. Our company uses the bag method. I have been told that this is simpler and you are most likely to get a usable sample with it as the hospital staff may be unfamiliar with anything else.

Sorry ladies, been really busy and haven't been back.

I started a similar thread back in May as we were looking into this. Myself and DH have both lost DS's to cancer, so this was something very close to our hearts. We looked at a few different companies offering Stem Cell collection and Storage and have decided to go with Smart Cells. I've paid an initial deposit (reduced rate of £50, normally £75) and the balance of £1200 is due once the cells have sucessfully been collected and stored. If the collection doesn't happen for any reason or storage goes wrong, you don't have to pay the remaining balance. The unit is based in Plymouth, the collection kit is very straight forward, my midwife looked at it and said it's the same precedure they use for resus negative mums, so all the doctors and midwives will know exactly how to do it. You are given a temperature controlled packaging box to send it off in and it's collected by DHL, all paid for. All you have to do is remember the collection kit in your hospital bag and have someone to call DHL for you to come and get it. Smart Cells policy is that once the child is 18, it is then up to them what happens to the cells. After the 25 year period, if they have not needed the cells, there are options. 1) donate the cells, either to a needy recipient or to further research. 2) pay additional storage fees and keep the cells longer (if they have found this is possible). It seemed a good deal to go with, especially knowing they want little money up front and there are no annual fees for storage. The price you see is the price you pay for 25 years peace of mind.

They are finding more and more things Stem Cells can be used for, even Arthritis. Hopefully, awareness of this procedure will be raised and more people can give their children the security of knowing if the worst ever happened, their own stem cells are there for them.

I also have a thread appealing for help for Bethany. She was first diagnosed with Leukaemia age 3, the same time my DS was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, 6 years ago. She has relapsed and a bone marrow donor is desperatly being sought. Unfortunately, she has a rare tissue type and finding a match is proving very hard. If her stem cells has been stored at birth, she would not need a donor. The perfect match would be there. So many children's and adult's life's are lost because matches cannot be found or donor products are rejected.

We know 26 children that died of Cancer, just on one ward, in one hospital and the space of 2 years. All the parents had one thing in common. We never thought it would happen to our kids.

Stem Cell collection, although expensive, could save your child's life if this ever happened to them.

What price can you put on that?

I hope you go for it.

I looked into this when I had DS - found a good site reviewing all the companies but can't find it now

Anyway at my hospital they refused to collect for us so we didn't go ahead

lenaschildminding · 23/09/2006 22:48

Which hospital was that? That is terrible, it's such a simple procedure and it could save lives. What reason did they give for not doing it?

TheBlonde · 23/09/2006 22:54

St Georges, Tooting
Can't recall the reason - hospital policy probably

More likely not enough staff available... I had a student mw deliver DS solo

edam · 23/09/2006 23:15

Nice little earner for the company - £75 even if the cells aren't collected! And they know perfectly well lots of hospitals won't play their game. I think you are being ripped off. There is lots of interesting research being done on stem cells, but it's not yet at the point where they are a proven therapy for anything.

3andnomore · 24/09/2006 09:50

Edam...as far as I know stemcells is indeed already used for cancer therapy and has been for a long time...I worked in oncology from 1992-1994 and it was used back then!
Saying that...it is a shame that it has to be so costly...it should be somehting that is just automatically done at teh Birth of every child...it would probably repay itself...hohum!

I am not sure if this is the right thread to post this, but will do so anyway. I am new here, so sorry if I've done this wrong. I am trying to find out if anyone knows anything about hospitals collecting stem cells (from the cord) without parental consent? I had a bad experience when giving birth to my daughter and subsequently filed an official complaint. One of the questions I raised was related to the midwife drawing blood from the umbilical cord, getting very excited by the fact she had two syringes full, but with no explanation. The hospital responded to the majority of my complaint but never commented on this particular matter. It keeps coming back and bothering me (two and a half years on). I don't know if I am for or against stem cell research, I just know I would like to have been consulted if that is what they were doing. Can anyone help?

RedTartanLass · 09/11/2006 21:18

Funky2603 - OMG what a horrendous thing to happen, I think I would completely freak if someone had done that to me without any explantion. Have the hospital not given you any reason?

You may be best start a new conversation with another title. At the top of the thread it says

Funky2603 · 09/11/2006 21:38

RedTartanLass - Thanks for your response, I will do that. The hospital never answered the question. When I filed my complaint I had 36 specific questions that I asked for answers to, so it was clearly laid out and they couldn't have missed it. I made the complaint within 6 months of the birth so was pretty much still a complete mess, so did not persue it at the time. It is only now that I think I may have the strength required to revisit that awful time. Thanks for the advice.
