At my antenatal class yesterday the midwife said not to bother buying/bringing to hosp 0-3 month clothes for dressing the newborn but to bring 3-6 month instead.

Everyone else I've spoken to has said not to bother with Newborn size but 0-3 month is fine. Are babies born swollen or something? or do you think she's a bit confused and just meant don't buy/bring the smallest size?

Even newborn swamped DS for the first few weeks!

Iklboo · 12/09/2006 15:32

Depends on how big your baby is! DS was too small for 0-3 months and we had to get some newborns. He was 7lb 2 - hardly teeny

NomDePlume · 12/09/2006 15:34

Babies do tend to grow out of 0-3mth stuff v quickly, but a 3-6mth would be huge on an average sized newborn. You could buy 3-6 but you'd have to roll the sleeves up and the baby's leg would prob stop about an inch short of the feet !

I'd buy a packet of 0-3 babygros (they are not expensive) and a pkt of 3-6mth (if you must) and see what size the actual baby is when he/she is born. You can always send DH/DP out to buy bigger ones if baby is above average weight/length

I did one or two newborn size and a few 0 - 3 months - I was given a whole crateload of stuff for newborns, some of which DS never even got to wear!
IT also depends where you shop as Petit Bateau comes up really small and mothercare are more roomy!

I think she was confused 0-3 goes up to about 14 lb. Unless you are expecting a big baby, i had 3 suits newborn and everything else 0-3. If anything newborns are smaller as they keep their legs up to their body after being scrunched up inside!

lemonaid · 12/09/2006 15:43

DS was 10lb 5.5oz at birth (so not titchy) and 3-6 month would have swamped him! He wasn't in the 0-3s very long, admittedly, but I'd have lost him in the babygro if I put a 3-6m on him in hospital...

Maybe this is her tactful way of telling you that you're having a 15-pounder...

Olihan · 12/09/2006 15:49

Unless you've been told in no uncertain terms that your baby is going to be HUGE then I'd take at least 3 newborn babygros with you. Ds and dd were both 8lbs+ born but needed newborn for at least the first month. Tesco ones are good for long babies, Mothercare ones are quite big as are Marks and Spencer (who do an Up to 1 month size). An average baby will be completely swamped by a 0-3, never mind a 3-6 month babygro.

colditz · 12/09/2006 15:52

both my ds's were around 8 and 1/2 pound, both needed newborn for a couple of weeks - but then if you don't mind baby looking scruffy for a couple of weeks (and I don't)

CarolinaMoon · 12/09/2006 15:55

you've got my sympathies if you're giving birth to a 14lb baby .

you will prob find 0-3 too big, but the 'newborn' size in some shops is for up to 7.5lb only, which won't fit a larger-than-average baby.

you could buy up-to-10lb gros for hospital, and maybe a few smaller ones as well if your family tends to produce smaller babies.

Babies can grow very fast, so you don't need too many small clothes or they won't all get worn.

Otoh, hospital p/n wards can be very warm (ds wore only a nappy most of the time we were in), so again there's a limit to how many babygros you'll need there.

Thanks all. Whew, I've been lurking for AGES and that was my first post; I was irrationally worrying that no one would reply

Just to clarify, the advice definitely wasn't aimed at just me (I'd definitely be panicing that she was trying to tell me something!!) but was aimed at the whole class... think i'll take some newborn and some 0-3 month and see what size baby I get....

welcome to mumsnet CricketSoph

My dd was only 6lb 10 and newborn looked large on her, I'd been given some second hand tiny baby clothes so she wore those for the first couple of weeks, and newborn. She didn't grow out of newborn until about 2 months. She also needed lots more than the suggested 3 babygros in hospital as she kept bringing up mucus, so had to get a few more. i'm just trying to say that all babies are so different I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. And my mum was happy to go off to mothercare and buy extra tiny clothes for her newborn Granddaughter .

Tommy · 13/09/2006 14:12

we didn't do the newborn size in anything but for my 2 (8lb 13oz and 8lb 11oz) the 0-3 were fine for a few weeks.
I wonder if she meant the newborn size were not necesary?

hairymclary · 13/09/2006 14:16

yes, i think she has got her wires crossed. My ds was over 9lb and was in newborn size babygros for ages.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 13/09/2006 14:18

I would take some of each size. Depends how long they are! Ds was very long but skinny, I took an all in one coat with me for journey home (january) and it was huge in the body but too short and that was 0-3.
