Mum had a quick hospital birth with me, I arrived at 5am. Dad was not allowed to attend and so was milking the cows, he saw the sunrise and hence my middle name became Dawn

I arrived 3 weeks late and breech. They had told my Mum that I was a small baby so vaginal birth no problem. She ended up having an episiotomy right down her leg and I was black and blue from the neck down where they had had to pull me out. Trauma lead to miscarriage of her next baby and problems carrying my sister.

Birth of mine was very straightforward by comparison. Mum's labour sounded so horrible I'm amazed she was prepared to go through it again.

I was mum's first and last baby born in australia in 1977.
I was breech and was a planned c section on mums due date.
Mum went into labour the night beore and had the c section on the due date as planned.

My dad recently passed away and the stories of how my sister and I were born are some of my favorite stories about him. Sorry if this is lengthy.

With me, my mom started labor around 4am. However, my father told her to be quiet and go back to sleep. This happened about every hour until 8am. My mom announced that she was going to the doctor with or without him. When they got to the doctor, he told them to go straight to the hospital, because I was on the way. My dad however decided that on the way they could stop at my aunt's house for a quick visit. Needless to say my parents got the hospital with about 20 minutes to spare. At 10:15 am I was born and my mom says that I just slid out, although I don't think a 9lb 8 oz baby just slides out.

With my sister my mom was in the hospital overnight and they told my dad to go home and rest, because they didn't think anything was going to happen. At 3:00 in the morning my sister decided she was ready to be born. Well, calling my dad was difficult. In fact the nurse asked my mom, "Is your husband a heavy sleeper?" After an hour of calling my dad he finally woke up and made it to the hospital just in time.

I tell this story to remind everyone that sometimes our husbands can bring just as much drama to pregnancy as we can.

My mother had a horrid time having me, was given drugs to speed up labour, then to slow it down and basically ended up in an out of control drugged up haze
With my bro, no drugs, she had "a song" to get her through it. She is under 5ft tall, he was over 10lb

My mother had already had 4 children much earlier, I was almost like her second family, 16 years after her last one!

She said there were lots of first time mums giving birth that day so they got all the attention. In fact the midwives tried to delay her as long as possible so that they could deal with the frightened youngsters first. Apparently I was breech but luckily the doctor managed to turn me by manipulation. However I kept spinning back around and so in the end they strapped great big boards to her sides as a sort of splint to force me to stay put. How uncomfortable must that have been!!!

She had had all of her "first family" at home including twins with no troubles at all and very quickly. I took forever and made her have heavy blood loss and need lots of intervention. She always swore this was because of all the messing about the doctors insisted on doing. She wasnt about to make any allowances for the fact that she was 41. Infact she was feeling 21 again with this brand new baby until she also became a grandmother a few weeks later.

mum went into labour on her due date, 6 am in the morning, went to hospital, slept most of the labour, i was delivered at 12 by forceps, she claims it was quite easy..but it was 34 years ago..i bet shes forgotten the pain!

Emskilou · 15/09/2006 12:27

Mum was fine having my older sister but nearly died giving birth to me. She had a retained placenta that had to be removed by emergency surgery and lost so much blood that she needed a large transfusion. In spite of all that she said she still wanted more children but alas was not to happen until she became pregnant again naturally by accident at the tender age of 46! Unfortunately she had a miscarriage at 16 weeks but the bad experience she had with me didn't put her off wanting more children.
