SPD and vaginal delivery?

Under consultant care for a bone condition. Currently 39+2 weeks pregnant. Saw consultant yesterday and explained I've been having a lot of pain walking (due to extra weight and my condition) also having pelvic and back pain. Doctor confirmed I have SPD and gave me cocodamol which doesn't seem to be working Hmm. Although he was nice enough to get one of the midwives to give me a sweep. I think the sweep has been unsuccessful but there's still tomorrow.

The pain in my pelvic area feels so much worse today and I seriously can hardly walk. I was wondering how ladies manage a vaginal delivery with SPD? Experiences would be much appreciated!

Don't have any further appointments arranged with consultant, he just told me to see my community midwife next week for another sweep if I'm still pregnant Confused. It feels as though I'll be this was for the rest of my life, dramatic!

SPD didn't cause any problems with delivery at all.
It may impact the birthing positions you are comfortable in. I kneeled which was great - stable, didn't need to move my legs too far apart and couldn't inadvertently cause any damage.
I was advised to measure or tie string to show the greatest distance that my knees could go without pain. This is to inform the midwives in case you get beyond caring about SPD pain or have an epidural as you can cause longer term damage that way.
I understand 2nd stage is likely to be quicker as your pelvis opens more but as I've always had it, (and had good 2nd stages) I can't comment on whether it would be different.
Delivering did make it better and I didn't notice significant pain afterwards. There probably was for a week or so but I was moving so carefully from the birth that I didn't notice anything and by the time that healed the SPD pain was also gone.
Good luck, I hope the sweep kicks in soon.

SPD didn't impact on my ability to have a vaginal delivery, but the contractions seemed to cause more pain in my hips than anywhere else....it was a very weird sensation!!

It was a bit difficult to move into different positions, but not too bad. There was no SPD pain after the birth.

Good luck.

Thank you both for the replies. I was worrying that labour would be worse opening legs/pushing with SPD but I guess there are ways to feel more comfortable. Here's to hoping it goes away after delivering! Smile

I had quite bad SPD with DS2 and labouring and delivering in water was really beneficial for me as it supported my weight, if you're under consultant care then the birthing pool may well be out as an option, but you still may have access to a bath that could help during the earlier stages of labour.
