natural birth after hip replacements? Any chance?

Hi
I have a friend who has had bi lateral hip replacements, she is 7 mths pregnant and a obgyn has told her she has to have a c section, while she would have this if she has to, she would like to know if anyone has given birth naturally after a hip replacement? She is very keen to deliver as naturally if possible.
Thanks!
Jane

Jane, I'd be very surprised if they'll let her try to deliver naturally. You strain your pelvis and pull badly on those muscles that hold your hip in place while in labour, so I'd guess there's a strong chance that the hip will dislocate.
Even if it doesn't dislocate during the birth, I'd have thought the risk will be more than usual in the following days or weeks, and the last thing she'll need is to have a dislocation while trying to care for her new baby.

I wouldn't think it's worth the risk. I had my ds by c-section, and it really was much easier than I expected it to be, and I don't believe the negative stuff about bonding etc.

Best wishes to your friend. We 'younger hippies' have to stand up for each other

Thanks I am collating replies for her to call her with later
When you google you find that natural delivery isn't contra indicated after hip replacement which is confusing - me I know nothing about it hence asking you learned and wise lot for her!

My SIL had a C-section after a hip replacement (no idea what type). She actually had to fight for it despite having a letter from her orthopaedic consultant saying a natural birth could put undue strain on her hip.

She slipped recently and has been told to spend at least 3 months "recovering". From the very little I know (apart from the huge pushing on that region I experienced during labour) I would have thought that the risk the birth will damage or dislocate her hip just isn't worth it. She may not be able to pick up her baby from a bed for months.

Thanks (again!!) Jimjams I saw a similar article but the majority says not really as risk of complications is too high.
I will let her know what I have seen and then she can arm herself on her way to the doctors!
