Hi, after a bit of reassurance Blush

Baby born 10 days ago, had the normal red blood, turn to brown/yellow and started to get back to normal. Saturday I started loseing quite abit more red blood, Sunday going through about 3 maternity pads an hour (not every hour) accompanied by lower dull abdominal pain, today (TMi again, sorry) but fresh pad filled within seconds and trickleing down legs aswell.

Anybody else had this? Not sure if its relevant but baby was a vaginal birth, but delivered face first/sunny side up Smile

I bled for nearly 8 weeks with both mine, so carrying on for more than 10 days wouldn't be unusual. However, that amount of blood does not seem quite right to me - ring your midwife/gp for advice.

MagicMojito · 23/06/2014 15:57

Thankyou for replying :)

I rang midwife yesterday and was told to just keep an eye on it. Not quite sure what I'm supposed to be keeping an eye out for though to be honest Blush

I only bled with Dd1 for less than a week with no pain at all so this is just throwing me abit!

Are period type pains normal at this stage does anybody know? X

Yes, I would say its normal as long as your not passing huge clots, I bled for 8 weeks after dd1 and 4 weeks after dd2 Sad then as soon as it stopped I got my period.

marne2 · 23/06/2014 16:04

Things to keep an eye out for : if it smells bad ( sorry if TMI ), could be a sign of infection.

MagicMojito · 23/06/2014 16:17

That just seems hugely unfair marnie

It's good to hear no horror stories as yet
It doesn't smell bad, just a really strong iron smell (again, sorry Blush ) X

Have you started doing much more than you were before? Mine became heavier when I started doing stuff again - not with my PFB though as I could sit around doing bog all with him. :)

TBH, I don't think it sounds right though, especially "fresh pad filled within seconds and trickleing down legs aswell"

Period pains are normal, you are able to take ibuprofen or paracetamol, you can.

Have you been out walking/doing a lot more activity over the weekend? This could explain fresh bleeding. Did you tell the midwife how much blood loss you were having? Fwiw with dd1 I lost about 2 pints of blood at delivery and barely bled after, no red blood at all. With dd2, I lost about 1/2 pint at delivery but had red loss on and off for about 4/5 weeks.

Congratulations! Flowers

Mummymidwife87 · 23/06/2014 17:07

Are you having significant pain?
Do you feel unwell at all?

Bleeding up to 8weeks is normal, however at 10 days I would not expect it to suddenly start trickling down your legs, changing filled pads hourly.

If you had called me with that description, I may be suggesting a trip to hospital, either A&E or del suite, whoever sees you postnatally. Give delivery suite a call, the 24hr advice line.

Fresh01 · 23/06/2014 17:11

Keep an eye on it as filling 3 pads in an hour sounds like a lot.

Do you feel like your muscles down below are trying to push? 3 weeks after I had DC4 I had a weekend of cramps and period type pain only to then pass a clot the size of the palm of my hand then it all stopped. I hadn't had excessive bleeding before passing the clot.

With DC1 i had bleeding (varying amounts) for 12 weeks before I had a D&C to remove a tiny amount of retained placenta.

Keep in touch with your MW as there can be other reasons.

MagicMojito · 23/06/2014 17:22

I don't feel particularly unwell, tired and abit headachy but that's it really.

Yes Im sure iv overdone things the last week or so but I have a husband who is back at work (unavoidable) a newborn and a toddler to contend with Grin so its pretty full on at the minute!

What's a d&c? There does seem to be some presure "down below" not constantly but it does kind of feel as if your insides are Guna fall out...

Hi Magic, that is not normal, 3 pads an hour at day ten is above average and could be a sign of either infection or retained tissue.
Can you go back to where you had the baby and see midwife/medical staff.
You might be headachy due to anaemia caused by the bleeding.
I would try and be seen tonight if I were you.
Am a mw btw, good luck x

MagicMojito · 23/06/2014 17:41

Oh no :(
So hope its just infection, I'm officially terrified :(

I have terrible needle phobia and anxiety.
Could one of you lovely mw's tell me what's likely to happen if I do go in to hospital, just so I'm abit prepared... oh god I'm actually shitting myself now.

Magic they will probably check you over, temp bp pulse ect
Feel your tummy, do a vaginal swab( easy like a long q tip)
Maybe a scan and definitely check your bloods.
They would only offer you an op if there is a lot of clot/ tissue in your womb.
They may well start you on a course of antibiotics.
You really should go even though you are anxious can your dp take you?
Give the hospital a call now xx

Ilovefood15 · 23/06/2014 17:53

I had something similar to this 2 weeks after giving birth. Fresh red blood filling a couple of pads and hour and trickling down my leg - I was so scared! It did only last a day and then went back to light bleeding, I'm still lightly bleeding now 5 weeks later! I think the heavy bleeding was because I was doing too much!

MagicMojito · 23/06/2014 17:58

When you say "offer" does that mean that I can opt out of having an op? X (sorry I do realise your not at work and I'm not your patient, just desperate for reassurance :( )

OP posts:
Norem · 23/06/2014 18:37

No one can force you to do anything you don't want to in hospital :)
They will probably just give you antibiotics for a week or so.
They might decide there is nothing wrong at all but it is the sensible thing to go and get advice / help even though I know it is worrying you.
Take a deep breath and give them a wee call xx

Fresh01 · 23/06/2014 18:38

As I understand it they can do an ultrasound or not (as I had it in 3 out of 4 pregnancies) to check for retained products. If there is some they put you on a course of antibiotics. They use to do a D&C (don't think about it but a simple short procedure and didn't affect BF) sooner but now do antibiotics first.

My bleeding with DC1 was classed as normal till it got past 8/9 weeks.

With DC4 I had seen GP to get antibiotics as was feeling unwell. Then went I passed the clot called my delivery suite who asked me in for a scan but all had passed.

If worried tonight call your delivery suite and ask for advice as there will always be someone there.

marne2 · 23/06/2014 21:08

Magic, I had an infection after dd1, was still bleeding quite heavy but it had a nasty smell too it, I was very ill ( felt very sick and a very high temp ), had to call out my gp as I was in agony, was given codeine and antibiotics, was sent for a scan which showed I had not cleared all the placenta ( when I gave birth it did not come out in one piece and a few small pieces were left behind causing infection ), luckily after the antibiotics my body cleared it naturally so was no need for a d&c.
