Broke my coccyx (tailbone) and about to go through labour - experience anyone?

Hi all - having another panicky moment. I've just realised I've not told my midwife that I broke my tailbone (coccyx) falling down the stairs when DS1 was 8 weeks old while holding him so it took the full force of the fall which was from the top (so that's just over a year and a half ago). It still hurts when I'm sat for long periods and recently has been aching even more which I assume is due to my being 37 wks pg and rather heavy!

Has anyone gone through labour after an injury like this - did it affect it at all?

Just adding to this chat in case anyone comes to it later. I broke my coccyx 18 months before giving birth and the pain of my coccyx surpassed the labour pain/surges by quite some distance. I had mentioned it to my midwife but I'm guessing no one thought it would affect me that badly. It all went back to normal (hard surfaces make it ache still) pretty quickly but I'm not in much of a rush to repeat the experience.

I also broke my tailbone and have had 2 natural labours since. It was absolutely fine and didn’t cause me any issues at all 🙂

I'm thinking OP got through it - this thread is 18 years old 🙈🙈🙈

Hi everyone 👋. It’s so relieving to hear stories (success stories) about broken tailbones and successful vaginal deliveries. I broke my tailbone when I was about 8 or 9 (jumped onto a mat on a cement floor that slipped out from under me… not a gymnastics stunt I swear)…but I’m now 30 and pregnant with my first baby. I’m terrified about my tailbone position (it’s slanted inward) and my delivery & how it will go. The doctor wants to do another X-ray but I want to avoid that at all costs. Has anyone had their tailbone re-break during delivery? Any complications with the baby? I know this thread is super old so I hope I can hear about some more success stories!

I broke mine in early pregnancy with DD one. My gynae had a “feel around” and said that it had been pushed upwards and was shaped like a fish hook and would have snapped again should I give birth vaginally. (Confirmed by X-ray after the birth) It became increasingly painful as oxytocin increased and so did my baby.

Alexcia9 · 08/11/2022 16:26

@Fraaahnces oh how painful! Did you do a vaginal birth or c section? Mines straight but at an angle, not fish hooked.

Fraaahnces · 08/11/2022 17:41

C-section both times. Also, spinal anaesthetic didn’t end up working due to leaking fluids around same area so needed a general anaesthetic both times also. Tbf, kids are now 18 & 16 y/o twins and the coccyx is still fish hooked. Everyone hale and hearty. That’s all that matters.

Thank you all for sharing your stories! I also have a broken tailbone (90 degrees inward) and am terrified of vaginal birth.

My midwife consulted with ortho and perinatologist who both said I would have a fine vaginal delivery, and would definitely need to utilize the epidural. They also said it probably would not re break and the baby will be totally fine/ no harm should be fine🙏🏻. If yours is at that angle, do they suspect it’ll re break during delivery? Have you had recent X-rays before pregnancy? When are you due ?

Ispilledmycoffee · 10/01/2023 16:26

Not pregnant yet, trying for a baby and am stressing myself out, as usual 😁. It was like that since I was 9. The only thing my doc said was "there could be complications".

Alexcia9 · 10/01/2023 20:01

Before you get pregnant can you get X-rays ?

Ispilledmycoffee · 11/01/2023 22:26

Yeah, I will try to have one. I was able to see its positioning in an MRI a few years ago. I doubt anything has changed though.

Alexcia9 · 12/01/2023 01:31

I would highly suggest that and get a few second opinions regarding risks associated with pregnancy and if a vaginal delivery is an option for you. Best of luck 🙏🏻
