How fast was your 2nd labour compared to your first?

DP is working a few hours away and only back on weekends, now I'm nearing 37 weeks it's getting me worried that he won't make it back on time. I just wondered how different everyone else's 2nd labours were compared to their first? If you go overdue with your first are you likely to have the same again?

First labour 4 hours start to finish 13 days past due date.
Second labour about an hour, home birth, 5 days past due date

BrianTheMole · 27/05/2014 10:05

6 hours the first time, 3 hours the second time.

BrianTheMole · 27/05/2014 10:06

Both were one day overdue, weirdly born on the same day of the week.

cosmicnibbles · 27/05/2014 11:03

1st - 36 hours start to finish, 2 hours of pushing, 10 days before edd.

2nd- labour started about 11pm on due date, but quite mild, about 8am got more intense - decided to leave for MLBU at 10am- arrived at 10:45, had to make way from carpark to MLBU in transition.. just time to hop into a pool before baby born after 4 mins of pushing..

Also two friends recently have had unplanned home births with second dcs!

It's so different for everyone though.. Good luck op!

1st 2.5hrs active labour, 2nd 45mins active labour - felt v fast!

DillydollyRIP · 27/05/2014 11:08

My 2nd labour was about 2.5hrs. He was born in the entrance to hospital as didn't make it upstairs to the maternity wing. It was about 1/2 the time of dc1.

nickstmoritz · 27/05/2014 11:09

First was awful - induced and took days. Second was fast. Only just made it to hospital in time. Good job it was early hours and no traffic! Might be because it was only 18 months after first? Third was home birth (planned) and was longer than second but alot more relaxed.

SizzlesSit · 27/05/2014 11:09

1st labour - twinges at 5am, 3cm at midday, gave birth at 8pm

2nd labour - twinges at 8pm, 3cm at 7am, gave birth at 9am

Both times I had plenty of warning but the second time was very fast once labour was established

DS1 = born at 38+5
DS2 = born at 39+4

littlemrssleepy · 27/05/2014 11:15

Labour 1 - 3.5 hours
Labour 2 - 61 minutes

I had a planned home birth because it was considered safer given speedy first birth and the fact that second births are often a lot quicker.

DS1 = born at 34 weeks - Labour 1hr 47 minutes from 1st twinge to having in arms
DS2 = born at 32 weeks - Labour 1hr 42 minutes

mummylin2495 · 27/05/2014 11:32

First baby 4 1/2 hours from first pain to last
Second baby 3 3/4 hours from first pain to last

Kveta · 27/05/2014 11:33

1st labour: 72 hrs, including 2 hrs of pushing before they whipped him out with forceps.
2nd labour I was induced, and it was 14 hrs, including 1.5 hrs of pushing before they whipped her out with forceps.

There will not be a 3rd...

bringbacksideburns · 27/05/2014 11:41

1st - standard. Went in Friday at midnight, waters broke early. Pethidine and saline drip. Born Sunday 3am.

2nd - mild back pains at 6am, by 8am pains worse. Caught in traffic jam at 9am with full contractions. Walked into hospital fully dilated and baby born 30 mins later!

prettydaisies · 27/05/2014 12:20

1st about 5 hours. 2nd about 45 minutes - that was rather scary. 3rd was about 2 hours - much better! My 1st 2 were both born 2 weeks early and the 3rd was 1 day early.

spottydolphin · 27/05/2014 12:22

ds1- 18hrs
ds2- 6 hrs
ds3- 48 mins
ds4- 2.5hrs

all from first twinges to holding baby

Spanielcrackers · 27/05/2014 12:26

1st 45 hours and 20 minutes
2nd 2 hours and 14 minutes

wildstrawberryplace · 27/05/2014 12:39

1st 48 hours from first contraction to holding baby (ending with epidural and forceps) at 39 +6
2nd 2 hours (gas and air only - turned up at triage fully dilated and ready to push, I had no idea until I was examined) at 37 +4.

My advice would be to ring him as soon as you get the first twinge!

Chipandspuds · 27/05/2014 12:44

Eek! Scary how fast some peoples labours have been the second time around!

I've heard the second labour is half the time of the first.

DS was 5.5 hours from waking up with first twinge to delivering him.

I'm pregnant with DC2 at the moment so watching this thread with interest!

When I was discharged with DS the midwives did tell me to get to hospital sooner rather than later with next baby.

StrumpersPlunkett · 27/05/2014 12:48

first labour no false starts but 36 hours from first regular timed contractions to placenta delivery
second labour 2 false starts then 4 hours ffrom first contraction to placenta and 20 minutes from 3-4 cm to baby out.

OldBeanbagz · 27/05/2014 12:49

DC1 - 5 days over due & labour lasted 9hrs
DC2 - 1 week early and only 2½ hours in labour!

AntinousWild · 27/05/2014 12:54

Dc1- 31hr labour, including an 8hr second stage. I was 38wks
Dc2- 38hr labour. I was 36wks

WhatWillSantaBring · 27/05/2014 12:59

Dc1 - 39+4, 8 hours (4hours first stage, 4 hours pushing)
Dc2 - 41+1 45 mins (40 mins first stage, 5 mins pushing)

Bicnod · 27/05/2014 13:03

DS1 (born on due date) - about 8 hours first stage with 2 hours pushing.

DS2 (1 day late) - about 1 hour first stage with 10 minutes pushing Shock

Currently 9+1 with DC3 and slightly concerned about making it to the hospital on time - went through transition with DS2 in labour ward reception area...

RoseberryTopping · 27/05/2014 13:14

This has made me even more nervous! My first was an induction, not sure how long active labour was but the whole thing from pessary in to him being born was 20 or so hours, so I'm thinking it'll be less than 10 hours this time.

If everyone could keep their fingers crossed that I go on a Friday evening/Saturday morning I'd much appreciate it Grin
